Mac popularity is going down, it seems, based on new data revealing that OS X now only powers 6.1 percent of all personal computers. The company’s own sales data would reflect this.

According to web analytics vendor Net Applications, Apple’s desktop and notebook operating system—formerly OS X, now macOS—powered just 6.1 percent of all personal computers last month, down from 7 percent a year ago and a peak of 9.6 percent as recently as April 2016. …The Mac’s 6.1 percent user share in December was the lowest mark recorded by Net Applications since August 2011, more than five years ago. Although the Mac number fluctuates month to month—as do all estimates from the metrics firm—its general trend has been up for two-thirds of a decade: In 2009, for example, the Mac accounted for only about 5 percent of all personal computers.

this is mine,

Yeah, I was wondering when people would pick up on this. Some folks were going ape over the big jump 7 had which was twice as fast as 10. However that December Survey was overall very favorable to Windows. Windows XP, 7 and 10 all grew and gave Windows a mind blowing 91% plus market share. macOS use collapsed down almost 9% month over month. Even Linux was down a good bit from 2.31% to 2.21%

These are just snapshot numbers, I don't think much can be made of them in isolation. I seriously doubt that there were 9% fewer macOS users from November to December.

Not surprising because their stuff has always attracted the me-too, hipster crowd. And now they're becoming tired of the same shit year after year.

While PC sales have been shrinking for some time now, Mac sales recently haven't been doing any better.

As I said before, "Apple Mac usage is on the way down." & "Soon the iPhone will follow the same trend unless they can keep innovating." I am boggled every time I look at apple's market valuation.

Well they kind of slacked off in that market haven't they? All the marketing spent on iphones and ipads only.

But on the other hand it's surprising, as I've heard a few people who wanted to get a new computer, but hated the idea of W10 have considered just getting a Mac.

Yeah, on the Mac forums there's incessant complaining, walls of text of fire and brimstone, but after all of that it mostly ends with: "I'm buying another Mac", or "I'm keeping my Mac Pro from 2009, it's a BEAST!" Or something like that. They need therapy, or something. I honestly didn't know Windows was that bad.

Anyone currently using Windows 7 that would get a mac because of what they think about Windows 10, really isn't thinking. The different between Windows 7 and 10 is minor compared to the difference with a Mac.

Three things:

1) Apple's market valuation compared to their cash flow and other large companies in the space is mindbogglingly low.

2) Most smartphones coming out are simply clones of the last versions of the phone. This is not unique to Apple. No phone vendor has really pushed the envelope in a few years as far as I can see in terms of earth-shattering innovation. I find the argument that Apple "can't innovate" in the space is a bit empty considering no one else really seems to be doing a whole lot different either. To suggest they're not the first mover they once were would be fair, but to suggest they're somehow massively lagging wouldn't be.

3) iOS apps are unique to iOS and a lot of users who have accumulated them and don't feel like buying them again for Android or another platform will likely continue to use iOS.

What could be innovated at this point? Currently VR is being pushed, kinda; but phones CAN'T push good enough gfx for VR, they can do various video formats(PORN) which is interesting, but gimmicky. They tried for several years with various body-telemetry type things, but then they realized no one actually cares about themselves, just how other people think about them, so that flunked. Whats next? Better call quality? A modern solution to daily telemarketing calls? Battery life? NAH, fuck that, lets have wireless audio so there's another reason for your call sounding like shit, plus another $50-150 you can drop on accessories. YEAH WOO

That valuation is based on the fact they hold on to the current market and grow. They are not. In fact sales are sinking. Which leads to #2

Innovation...If you don't have it, you don't have anything new to sell. No sales, no new income. I'm not saying android is any better. But the sales market for phones is plateu'd and will liekly contract soon. (Just as LCD tv's as most people have them now)

Most apps people use are free. And the few that aren't are in danger to being locked in. The new development platforms for visual studio are in the works which will not only code for all 3 platforms at once, but port your app across those platforms once you install it. (From what I understand) Why do this? It's all part of microsoft's strategy.

That's kind of the point. So Apple constantly gets bad press for "not innovating", but my question always is, which company in the space actually is innovating? All minor evolutionary changes at this point.

The valuation was still low when they were posting high growth numbers compared to companies like Tesla who "might make money in the future". The fact of the matter is Apple's cash flow is unmatched. People are panicking because their last quarterly earnings report "only" had $46.2 billion in revenue. That's hardly panic time for a stock that trades at 14 times earnings, of which 1/3rd of it's market cap is actually CASH IN HAND.

With regard to your second point, Apple's ecosystem has notoriously been cited as sticky, not to mention they have a cult-like following among their user base who seems perfectly content to pay premium prices for what is not necessarily a premium product just because it has an Apple logo on it.

I think the biggest thing they are missing right now is any form of touch screen on OS X. Not that it would be that useful to me, but people are getting so damn used to touch touch touch, you may as well add it for the price point.

But other then that, the operating system is great for day to day life. Windows still doesn't come with an email program that's worth a shit. I guess the fact it ships with one at all now is nice.

As Americans, in general it can be hard to understand, but sometime cost or money isn't the driving factor for people's purchasing decisions. They just have other desires and needs.

Hasn't it been nearly 5 years since they upgraded the CPU and GPU's in most of their machines? :p

Bring back a 17" model with proper ports, GPU and RAM support, then I'll think about it.
None of this Jonny Ives, "courage" bullshit.

Then again...

Did you just download the whole image or can this be set up? I downloaded a virtualbox image and while it does function, it's laggy. I did it for developement (coding) stuff, so the lag is fine. Just wondering if VM Ware is better with it.
