Apple Unveils Faster iPhone, Chops Price

i am really pissed off it doesn't come with 32gb right off the bat. i want to combine my zen n my phone so i don't have to carry both. they always do this...leave out some important feature i'm sure they can cram in until the next update that gets another big fan fare and is missing some other key feature....damn and I really need a new phone... seems like a whole bunch of phones are being released in the next month so i guess i'll wait to see them all. i just hope they are good as this will be my first real cell phone (those free pieces of garbage don't count lol) and i want to be satisfied with it. who knows i might even get my friends old 8gb iphone if they give it to me for a good price

so they decreased the price by $200 and put on an extra $10 per month for 24 months (extra $240) on the data plan. does not really seem the price dropped much.

the real question is how much it is going to cost without a contract.
Yea, I noticed that. What slicksters. I wonder what the early ebay'ers will be selling it for.

all plastic? eww

This is also a mixed drink. Apple gave fans an all black model but then made it plastic? Weird...

On my current iPhone, the front is about 95% glass (screen) and with a edge of chrome (I believe that is the material). The plastic will be on the back only probably, unless they are not doing a border anymore and it is 100% plastic/black.

So, the new ones will have 3G in addition to Wi-Fi, correct? They didn't drop the wi-fi support did they? If this is the case, do you have an option or something to switch between the two, seeing as you can browse wi-fi for free, while browsing on 3G costs money, right? Just because I don't see why you would want to pay for browsing the net on 3G if you're in a wi-fi spot.

still no expandable memory or removable battery? come on now apple. is it really too much to ask for these 2 features? wouldn't be so much of a problem if everything was closed and it wasn't much of a media device. but you're looking at ppl downloading more and more apps, more and more music, and more and more vids. microSDHC would suffice. and removable battery? this one is self explanatory. since they're making it basically an "everything but the kitchen sink" device, why not allow us to buy a bigger battery for those who will use it all the time? i suppose thats a moot point if you have ready access to a charger but extra battery life is always nice. oh well. guess there is always the next version in 11 months :p

Data plans are unlimited so you will not be charged additional for 3G usage. That said, there is an option to disable 3G and go EDGE only, as 3G is more of a drain on battery life.

Also, they now require in store activation, AT&T or apple. You are not buying one without a contract.

My father got himself the original iPhone around the 1st of June...so he's eligible for swap for the new phone. Before that was announced he was prepared to give me his old iPhone when he got the new one. He said it would be my Birthday (3rd of June)/Christmas Gift. Seeing how I currently have an HTC 2125 I wasn't about to turn him down. Now you'd think with this offer it would mean no iPhone for me. Not true...he's going to keep his promise, but swap his phone for a new one, and buy a second new one for me.

The only thing I'm disappointed in a little bit was the plastic case...but then again my current phone is entirely plastic anyway...just like MOST phones are...so I won't be missing anything there.

The thing I'm wondering about is how many SMS messages come with the $30 data plan....the current $20 plan for the iPhone comes with 200...will the $30 plan also come with 200 or more/less?

As it is right now my amount per month won't change. I currently have a $40 voice plan (I use maybe 20% of that...I have a ton of rollover minutes) with a $30 unlimited data plan with my 2125. That Dataplan gets me 1500 sms messages per month...so I'm wondering if the plan will basically be the same.

The current iPhones will default to use the Wi-fi connection over the EDGE if they detect and can sign on to a Wi-Fi network so I would assume or hope the 3G ones will do the same since most cases Wi-Fi will be faster.

I work for a rival phone company. This is an engineering trade off Apple is making. You create a whole list of issues with things like removeable batteries and memory card slots. For example a remoable batter would cause you to have to re-engineer the covers to allow for a removeable slot. That adds extra parts (back cover, batter contacts, ect) to your inventory, increases the cost for the plastic modeling (ie its cheap to make a sold back then one that is removeble with a cover), increase engineering cost, makes a HUGE increase in relaiabilty issues (lots of our phones come back with broken contacts on the batter), limits you on battery opitions, ect. Simular for the memory card. Now NONE of these are show stopers and other devleopers (including us) do them, but again its a design trade off.

For me I am hoping they have MMS, Cute/paste and support stream bluetooth Stereo. I realize working for a rival phone company its not in my best interested to support Apple. But I have to give them credit where its due!

It's going to be hard for the eBay scum to sell this one considering they have to sign up for a plan in the store and have it activated.

...That said, the price reduction really has to do with Apple finally allowing cell partners to subsidize the iPhone price, like they normally do with all of their other cell phones...

Good write-up. I still dislike what they are doing to the consumer and their rabid fan-base, but you can't fault the intelligent marketing that has gone on around this stuff. In this case, Apple should have been still quoting the price of the phone, not the subsidized price of the phone. That price should have been quoted by the carriers, who are only too willing to let Apple do and say what it wants in exchange for the privilege of carrying this product in their line. Especially since the consumers really don't care what the carriers have to say, they just kind of ignore them as a necessary vehicle to get them into the iPhone.

Its probably been said before, but iphones are overrated. 3g iphones still like mms/pic text and bt stereo headset. One good thing that can be said is that there easy to forget.. Picked on up one at the club that was on the floor and one at the grocery. Both were 8gb phones.

I think the reason they went with a plastic cover on the back was that it would have less interference with the wi-fi and 3g antennas in addition to keeping the costs down. Not to mention the plastic may hold up better to scratches though I keep my current iPhone in a case.

rumor true that the $199 iphones require a 2 year contract of plan that totals at least $100/month?

So this is how apple makes good on their claim that they will corner the market? It doesnt' work as planned so they release a new unit and slash prices...

Now lets wait till you get one free with subscription :D

don't they already have like 20 percent of the market in 1 year? Not bad I'd say.

Why does it matter? If I'm in a cell phone store, the only prices I see quoted are the subsidized ones. The only time I see an unsubsidized price listed is the rare case when there is an unlocked phone for sale that isn't tied to any cellular network. You'll almost always see this in places like independent cell phone stores, the Palm store, or ebay. You'll very rarely see it in dedicated carrier stores like Verizon, T-Mobile, or AT&T. That obviously isn't happening here since iPhone only has exclusive carrier contracts with specific providers, so it is a moot point.

and of course they fuck up the most important thing of all (aside from GPS and 3G), LETTING PEOPLE CHOOSE THEIR OWN DAMN CARRIER FOR THEIR APPLE MADE PHONE/IPOD/COMPUTER.

I should have the freedom to choose whose bending me over with my pants down over data fees and whatnot, i have verizon and i cant leave it, but i would love to ditch their crappy phones for an Iphone, damnit apple, just ditch the one carrier thing already!

They have no choice, will people remember this, Apple signed a deal with AT&T for a five year exclusive with the iPhone.

Ok, I have a year left in my AT&T contract and I was looking to get an iPhone. So will they just extend the contract to 3 years?

It's not Apple's fault that Sprint and Verizon had to go make everything difficult with their stupid anti-open CMDA crap. Apple went with GSM, a protocol that the rest of planet earth uses, so that they can sell the iPhone in countries other than the USA.

Its the main reason I've always been on GSM networks. I do a lot of business travel overseas and its nice to have my cell phone work everywhere I go. The only place I've had no luck is Japan because they also use their own system.

THAT is indeed not apples fault, what is is choosing only ONE of the GSM options to go with. Granted, as a verizon owner it would not do many much good if they had just released an open GSM phone, that at least would make more sense.

umm....signing that contract sounds alot like a choice to me, they could have just decided to sell the phone to anyone and everyone that wanted a great GSM phone (or god forbid an alternate CDMA flavored version) without locking themselves down to one company, heck, it probably would have had nothing but a positive effect on their sales.

The problem is they were left with AT&T in the end, all other carriers turned around on the Apple deal and did not want it. Maybe Apple had much to high demands for what they wanted, but either way it is stuck how it is for now.
