This is what I don't understand, I buy the BR and they provide me with a code to get it digitally (some older movies have a disc with a digital copy on it) as well but I can't make my own copy to add to Kodi? How stupid is that?

Its legal to rip the movie for backup purposes. It is not legal to bypass the encryption.
