Apple has revealed that iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV owners will be getting original content on its upcoming digital video service for free. Subscription options, such as HBO and Starz, will be available for those wanting premium channels for a fee.

Apple is spending about $1 billion on original content this year, targeting "PG-rated" shows that appeal to wide audiences and won't get the company in trouble by making them available for free to owners of all devices, said the people. Apple is also looking for "tent pole" franchises that could serve as linchpins to a paid Netflix-like subscription service down the road, two of the people said.

It's free after the 40-60% margin apple makes off of the owners of these products plus the insane gouging on the repair of said products at the "genius" bar. But yeah, it will be a great free "deal" for them otherwise.

Let's see I own an iPhone 4, 4s, 6S Plus and iPad Air2, this must qualify for something. BTW - I can get 3 months of free Apple Music on each of these devices and to be honest I might subscribed at the end since the kids loved it. I just need to spent the time and compare it to spotify and tidal.

It’s free in the sense you have to buy their product create an account and register for their services. Incidental sales are bound to happen, and that’s what they are banking on.

Hey Apple, you're not giving it away if you can revoke it later, just like the movies people have "bought" from you.

When I first read about htat, I was pretty outraged, but given that the movie that was revoked was bought in a completely different market and that person didn't download it, it's really not a big deal. If that same person went back to an area where Apple could sell the movie, they'd be able to download and keep it forever, regardless of where they were in the future. The same thing could happen with Amazon. If you buy a movie in England that they can't sellin the US and you didn't downlaod it before moving to the US, you're SOL.

Yeah see I don't really fucking care if the licensees aren't okay with me using my own fucking property in another country. That's their problem not mine.

When I buy a game on STEAM in one country, and I move to another, the game just works.

If they want to stop piracy, they need to stop being little bitches about shit like this. Make it EASIER for people to legit own their shit, NOT HARDER. Until then, I see no reason to give companies like Apple, or others, my money, if they can revoke my content at any time. Fuck that shit.

'Free' for how long? I can see folks buying the hardware, getting hooked on the still undefined shows, then getting a notice in a year or so that the free service is ending and will only cost $10/month.

I like spotify but I'm moving on, their app/program has too many issues with caching music or pre-downloading.

Right now I have over 5k songs pre-downloaded but now I'm stuck at "waiting to download" to which their tech support confirmed I have to remove everything and do it all over again. I've had to do this before and its still an issue, so I'm kind of over it at this point. Apple Music or YT Premium will be next for me!

With five girls and a woman in my house there's enough iShit around here that I should get stock in Apple, not just free episodes.

I have a newer Apple TV (not 4k model) on one of my TV's - I don't really care for it. I prefer a Roku over it any day. The remote for the Apple TV is bad - it's too small, easy to accidentally hit the touch screen, and seems to be "lost" almost every time I want to use it.
I used double-sided tape to attach a Tile to it. My next step is to attach it to a 2X4 I cut to size - see if my kids can lose a 6 foot piece of wood in the couch!
Anyway, good luck Apple. Your device is over priced and not as good as the much cheaper competition. Also, you are failing game developers. The device could be interesting, but they seem to be uninterested in pushing it.

If you already have an apple device (as I do) this is interesting. I wouldn't want to pay for unknown content, but if it's free, I'll bite. I'll watch just about anything once, no matter how cheesy it is, and maybe they'll have something good?

As to free, Apple has hundreds of billions of dollars in cash, and could do a lot without every making a dent in that reserve. Using it to push the video industry into the 21st century? Not the most altruistic use of the money, but somebody's got to do it!

I don't care WHAT shows on Apple. If it's exclusive to Apple, I ain't watching. PERIOD. Good luck with ratings on shows that only the isheep can watch!

How is everything nowadays a fucking subscription, what will they think of next, subscriptions to porn websites ?

That's what they meant by the reference to the tent pole franchises...

There are roughly 60 million Netflix subscribers in the USA.
There are ~90 million iPhone users, 78 million iPad users and roughly 22 million Apple TV users, so I don't think they're too worried about getting eyeballs.

Edit: removed ref to 2015 (it was incorrect).

Apple commercial. Like Transfromers was a GM commercial. Probably have an iPhone XS turn into Johnny Five and save the earth from ransomware-injected Samsung decepticons.

No it doesn't. You'll encounter the same problems on Steam as iTunes in regards to licensing terms.
