Not that Apple would ever use someone else's technology without permission, but that seems to be exactly what happened here, and when Apple got court ordered to pay a judgment, it did not do so. Now the judge has somewhat thrown the book at Apple, basically doubling the judgement. And all of this is about technology utilized from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. All the hubbub is over this patent filed in 1996 about advanced execution instructions. Of course Apple will appeal. Would not want to give any of those billions of dollars in cash to a university...

A US judge has ordered Apple to pay more than half a billion dollars to a university after the tech firm failed to abide by an earlier court ruling.

The original case covered Apple's use of the invention in its A7, A8 and A8X processors, which are found in devices including the iPhone 5S and the iPad Air 2.

No wonder Apple didn't pay, it's for a CPU branch predictor. They all work via a TBL lookup. Intel, PPC, Arm, Sparc etc, etc.

Prior Art......for fuck sake! The lame shitty patent was invalid when it was granted and still is now. Hell I wouldn't cough up either.

Doesn't matter. Apple has collected on patents that should be invalid for prior art (a lot of their portfolio) in the past, they don't get to pick and choose which ones they feel are valid and not pay if the court system says they have to.

Heck, a recent example is that Apple recently filed (few months back) an anonymous email patent that is similar in nature to GuerillaMail (just integrated). There's plenty of prior art that says that should not be granted, including GuerillaMail itself. Yet, they'll likely get it and enforce it heavy handedly. Should all of the others be able to then ignore their takedowns and lawsuit judgements? Guaranteed Apple will move to seize assets and collect in any means necessary.

Man, I wish I had thought to patent some of my trillion dollar ideas... I thought of developing a method to get from point A to B without using feet, measuring before cutting, the use of a symbol to denote a question in writen form...... I am kicking myself for not patenting my ideas so that I could now prey on companies that invested billions to implement a generally similar idea to mine.

Who cares what the patent was about... they took it to court and lost. The court ordered a payment.

I wish I could just pick and choose which bills I had to pay. What apple did would be like someone not paying a parking ticket for years cause they felt it was BS for whatever reason. If you fight it in court and loose you pay it.... and if you don't when you car gets booted or towed you don't cry, but but that ticket was always BS. lol

Don't panic, there's still time, the US patent office will grant friggin' anything. Gotta make some $ for the lawyers in the original court, then the appeals courts then the etc, etc, etc...

The US sucks when it comes to patents. Euro patent law is much more sane. It's far from perfect but we don't get anywhere near as much shit because of... erm, ya know - patent searches and patents not being granted on a whim / rubber stamped by a borked system.

Your patent office is why you have so many patent trolls in 'the land of the free'.... Guess what, it ain't friggin' free, your lawyers cost a fortune to defend against baseless shit.

I bet you wouldn't be saying that if a court decided you were guilty and were sentenced to 10yrs rodgering up the ass while in clink when you were innocent (of the crime you were charged with).

No I would hate it... and my appeal would be put in process, all while I was still locked up.

If Apple wanted to appeal this ruling they could have... but you can't just freaking decide to ignore what the court says.

For your analogy to be accurate... I would have to be on the run in Mexico and filling my appeal from there.

When the court says pay the piper.... slammer or fine... you pay the piper. Apple has no excuse at all. Their actions show complete disregard for the court system >.< If the ruling was the other way around I have no doubt they would be screaming bloody murder if someone who could afford to pay them was withholding payment cause the courts can suck it. ;)
