Apple doesn’t allow books on the App Store that contain objectionable content? One author found out the hard way that Apple bans books but the funny part is, the guy also works for C|Net and they are spreading the word.

iPhone SDK that states: "Applications must not contain any obscene, pornographic, offensive or defamatory content or materials of any kind (text, graphics, images, photographs, etc.), or other content or materials that in Apple's reasonable judgement (sic) may be found objectionable by iPhone or iPod touch users."

Are there parental controls integrated into the iTunes store?

It would seem that filtering content would be logical for a store that only restricts users < 13 years old from buying there.

Assuming parental controls are in place to deny access to said material by minors, I don't see a good reason for banning it entirely.

So would Apple ban Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" ?

Because Juliet was 13...

All this stupidity aside: who reads books on a phone? THe display is OK, but not for prolonged reading. Sheesh. Publish to the Kindle and other ereader stores.

Commuters who doesn't need to spend another $300 when what they have can do the job just fine.

I never buy newspapers during my commute or during lunch anymore because mobile.cnn.com works just fine on my Blackberry.

For news yeah, but I can't see reading a novel on my BB.

That aside, I don't see the big deal. Apple wants to set a moral standard for their store? Good for them.

This is why I wait for a good iPhone knock off from a company that doesn't tell you what you can and cannot do on the device. I admire the package Apple put together with the phone, but refuse to buy anything from them due to their company philosophy of complete control.

I find Apple and any of their iStuff objectionable.

Apple's reasonable judgement
lol!
They said that the text in question is "love me like you mean it" cept you use "a slightly more emphatic verb". I'm thinking replace love with fork?
Fork me like you mean it! YEAH!

Flawed logic. Where is this moral high-ground they sporatically show when it comes to music/lyrics? There is none.

The point of the article I took away was that they selectively apply this so called standard where they see fit.

There are seriously few scenarios when banning media is justified. Just another example of Apple's ridiculous behavior.

It's Apples store, they can carry what they want and preclude what they don't.

That said, I find it ironic considering the image that Apple attempts to portray of being the "hip, in, cool, free spirited thing". The last thing you think of, is censorship if you buy into that.
This does, however, jive perfectly with the reality of Apple and their "full control of everything" business methods.

With movies and music there are already censorship guidelines put in place by the MPAA and whoever decides to slap the "explicit content" stickers on CDs.

That said, this still seems way arbitrary. If they need to enforce anything then it should be via parental controls. Doing it wholesale like that is too much.

And agreed with those above on reading books on iPhones, Blackberry, or any other PDA; it really sucks and should only be done if you can't afford something like a Kindle. I'd rather just read an actual book or magazine itself if I didn't have a proper e-paper device with me.

yeah, some of you definitely a of a different generation, so to speak. many younger ones have no trouble reading nothing but electronic text

who cares.. apple can slash their market share as much as they damn well like.. i'd never buy an iphone...

Apple will be banning all their ads then since it's contents are questionable.

This is apples whole "Think Different" concept. Think different as long as you think the same.

The next Nazi flag is going to have a big black apple right in the middle of it with the slogan, "Apple, attempting to conquer the world since September 1st, 1939."

exactly, and as for morals...who's morals? Certainly not my morals. And that is the problem, everyone has a different set of morals and its wrong to impose yours on others.

places have tried media banning more than once... it never ends well...

Fixed for "Neo-Con-Fascist Those-Who-Agree-With-Us vs. Everything else Burn-The-Other's-Media Fahrenheit 911 Propaganda"

Fixed.

Admit to yourself that you watching nothing but Neo-Con-Fascist media and all the 'bias' accusations have nothing to do with seeking "unbiased balance" but are rather your closed-mind knee-jerk reactions of FEAR of other better-substantiated view points. The liberal's dont fear FOX because they know anyone with half their brain cells can see the joke and whacked out for-ratings right-wing pandering as entertainment for the backwards and in no way a pursuit of journalistic investigation or integrity in the slightest.

As for the topic, absolutely not surprised... when they're too blind to see why we're really calling them sheep and insist on un-upgradeable, inflexible, locked down hardware and software as a LIFESTYLE, then they should expect something like this.

The great irony of the Apple crusaders is that it is they are who really afraid to be different and shutter themselves for some sheltered view of exclusivity.

The only thing exclusive about apple is their prices. And now censorship.
