At first boot I did not even know it had done this today but five minutes of youtube and every fucking browser window in Chrome turned black. I checked the updates and sure enough Windows had installed a new video driver. I had the video drivers that I wanted to use which were only a few weeks old and Windows decides today to install the 388.13 drivers anyway. Those drivers have some issues that I wanted to avoid plus I like to do clean install when I install drivers. I have never had Windows install a video driver without jacking up something so this is par for the course I guess.

I recommend using the new registry entry they added for the Group Policy in Windows 10, ExcludeWUDriversInQualityUpdate

Ok try this instead. A lot to read and some steps to follow but it looks like Option 2 works.
SearchOrderConfig configures the Device Installation Settings dialog box, which used to show more options in Windows 8.1/10.
In Windows 7, it's 0=off 1=on 2=search only if driver is missing from driverstore.
In Windows 8.1/10, it's automatically install when set to 0, 1, or 2, and never install when set to 3.

Happened to me yesterday as well. First time I can recall that ever happening. I thought my monitor or video card was crapping out on me for a second.

I've had this issue in the past, and configuring the Device Installation Setting to not auto downloaded seemed to work for me until yesterday, where I had 388.13 automatically installed.

Now I've changed the Local Group Policy setting to enable the "Do not include drivers with Windows Update" thing.
Lets hope this works.

Also in ddu there's an option to not allow windows to auto install device drivers when you use the software to uninstall your graphics card drivers.

ddu will prevent the video driver from updating as it automatically turns off driver updates.

so did you do the windows fall update after you last ran ddu? that WILL reset the reg entries so you would need to ddu again to re-disable the updates. you never said you had tried ddu either....

I did the FCU when it came out and of course it fucked up my system then too. I had already used DDU after that to clean out that driver mess and install newer video drivers. In fact I have already updated my drivers twice since the FCU and always use DDU. I was on the 388.00 drivers but Windows 10 decided to install 388.13 yesterday and that setting in DDU has ZERO impact on stopping Windows from installing new drivers. Hell this time Windows even installed the silly 3D Vision and HD audio drivers along with the video drivers. That means I had to jack with my settings just to use my pc as normal. This is before having to go uninstall Afterburner and Riva Tuner and then go into safe mode and DDU the drivers and install the 388.31 drivers.

I really want to stick with the 388.00 drivers but I can't since Windows will eventually reinstall the 388.13. It is beyond fucking ridiculous that I am not given the simple option of using the video card driver that I want to use.

Used ddu last night to install the last 388 drivers and now you can't cha fe the windows driver setting in it.. just says it's already using default settings. So basicly it can't change it.

There used to be an option to turn it off but they removed it from windows a few updates ago. I didn’t mind the way windows updated itself but I hate that I have no control over my hardware drivers anymore.

Had this EXACT issue just yesterday. Follow this: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/1029247/geforce-drivers/980-ti-driver-issues-with-recent-updates/ Greybear has been posting his fix for a long time now and it stopped the auto updates to boot. Here's what he wrote(download each item he's posted beforehand and follow the steps):

I would get off that driver:

Download DDU (get the 17.0.7.5):
  • Install DDU

Hold [SHIFT] and click on RESTART Windows.
  • you will end up in Safe mode
Cannot use PIN, must use Account password to enter SAFE MODE

Run DDU:
  • Select: NVIDIA software and Drivers
  • Select: Clean and Restart

Run the Microsoft Show hide tool
  • Hide all NVIDIA software and driver
  • Run it again to make sure there are no more, if more appear, keep rerunning
Download this 382.33 driver
  • Run DOWNLOAD package
  • Select: CUSTOM
  • Uncheck EVERYTHING excpet the GPU Driver and PHYSX
  • Check the CLEAN INSTALL box
  • Finish install
  • Reboot
===========================

If you have a driver that you know was good, it should be located in the NVIDIA folder.

Default location: C:\NVIDIA\DisplayDriver\xxx.xx\Win10_64\International xxx.xx is the Version.

Run the SETUP.EXE file there.

===========================

Windows 10 PRO can turn off DRIVER updating. You have to DISABLE it.

Windows 10 HOME cannot. Every new Driver Release, Microsoft will push it to you. Rerun DDU, Rerun the Show hide tool, reinstall your Good driver.

So for only win 10 home you gotta do all that and not for win 10 pro? I have win 10 pro and I don't see an option to disable it.

O&O Shutup10 can disable all Windows updates, and specifically the driver updates IIRC.

There are three ways that your drivers are going to be updated.

1). The driver is included with Windows 10. You can't really get away from this installing at start just because it's included with the OS. Should only be used on first boot or if you are removing drivers you installed and need a base driver to temporarily function.
2). Device Installation Settings. This is the Yes/No setting in Control Panel. It's for hardware you have plugged in and using PnP detects and installs drivers. This can be left on because I do not believe it updates GPU drivers. Great for printers and such though.
3). Driver updates through Windows Update. This is the big one where people keep getting drivers installed (including GPU) that they don't want. You have to use the registry update, group policy, or 3rd party tool to disable Windows Update drivers to turn this off.

Well another fuck up from Microsoft today. There was a 20 GB update for Gears of War 4 and after that the game closed itself after a launched it and said it needed to be reinstalled to repair it. Of course that is 119 GB so no way in hell I am using 12% of my data cap to reinstall a game due to their fuck up. Plus their download speeds typically don't even use half of my bandwidth most of the time so it is a painfully long to wait. And it's not just me having the Gears of War 4 issue as I see others reporting the same thing. Hell I was one of those that went through the nightmare of having install issues when the game first came out with days of it just redownloading itself but never working until I fully deleted it from my system and went through all kinds of nonsense to get it to install.

I really do not understand how Microsoft can make an os when they are so goddamn incompetent even updating a game on their store. Both of the creators updates jacked up various things for me and of course this thread was about the Windows update installing 388.13 drivers which I did not want and was happily using the 388.00 drivers.
