There's 2 chips, I talked my father in law through swapping the one that you can get to by removing the plate on the bottom. But I think the other one is under the keyboard? Can someone confirm? I searched here and googled and didn't see any obvious answers. Figured I'd ask here. Thanks!

I read that the other 256mb chip isn't user replaceable. Whether that means its soldered on there or if its just hiding in a socket somewhere, I don't know.

Bugger Me! Sorry

Here is info I found on the "inspiron" 1000

the inspiron 1000 has 256mb integrated memory and one expansion slot for
additional memory. the system max is 512mb achieved by installed a 256mb
modules in the one memory socket.

for system documentation and more vist support.dell.com and look select your
computer in the right hand column.
or go here:

Interesting, becuase he already installed a 512 chip in the underneath slot and windows is reporting the 704 (well 768 minus the shared 64MB for video I assume).

So that shoots that theory to hell. Thanks for the info guys, I might tell him to just go with what he's got and return the other chip.
