Anyone else not really liking Shadow of Mordor?

I'm trying to like it but it's annoying me.

One fight after another and then I die and my killer gets promoted and is now even harder to kill.

I just don't like the game system. I prefer a simply save/load system instead of this "Nemesis" system which I absolutely loathe.

I really liked the Nemesis system. It adds risk and suspense to every battle, even minor ones. It's never enough risk that it creates an atmosphere of constant fear like Dark Souls has, but enough to make you focus in and give each battle your all. It's certainly not a game to play distracted, that's for sure.

Hmmm... I had a lot of fun with this game. I didn't really die too much in it. There are a couple of quests at the beginning you need to get done to start developing your skills, and then grind a bit to lvl up.

You reach a point near the end game that the Orcs should, and do, walk in fear of you.

Seriously, you'll get to a point that you can pick a fight with dozens and mow them down with impunity.

HAH! mow them down with impunity is putting it lightly. You become like a meteor smashing into a hotdog.

Oh.. and I liked the game quite a bit. It more or less gets boring as hell, when you beat the game though. Especially, if you played the side stuff for a while instead of speeding through the story.

Ok, may be i'm not playing it right.

I'm using a mouse + KB.

You folks using a controller?

I've heard of a lot of people playing the game a bit to learn the combat, and then wiping and restarting fresh to clear all of the Nemesis stuff they've accumulated after many trial and error situations.

Not really liking it either, but mostly because I haven't played it yet.

You need to interrogate the grunts and learn what the weakness is for each Captain / General. Then you can map out a plan of attack. That's how I stopped dying at the start of the game. Also learn to stop the guy running to ring the alarm. If he does run like hell!

A controller is almost required to get the best experience I'd say.

Using a wireless X360 one here and it makes things pretty simple. Also, when taking on the tougher named orcs... dont be afraid to run away if you get overwhelmed, and carefully choose what abilities and such that you buy with your points.

Also make heavy use of Wraith mode for arrows and distraction shots to get your targets away from other orcs.

I played and enjoyed it for a few days, but once I got a few hours into the 2nd map area I stopped playing
The nemesis system is very shallow and gets old fast. The environment is really crappy. It looks good, but it's got no character to it. The combat becomes effortless.

It's a great game, to a point, but I think it's alot more shallow than reviewers lead on. Side missions are repetitive and dull. I have branded all but 1 war chief and branded all the subordinates.... In the world, nothing feels like it has any impact. I can't bring myself to play it anymore.

Yea, I agree. I love the nemesis system, but it is very shallow. It could definitely do a lot more. However, this is just the first game to do something like it, so I'm sure there will be more, and be done better.

I absolutely loved this game. I don't see how this game could be played with a KB and mouse. I think if you get an xbox 360 or xbox one controller it won't be as frustrating.

I don't like it either. But it's not just about the nemesis system.
The game is underwhelming in every aspect. Repetitive fighting, uninteresting story, unlikeable main character. Poor excuse for graphics. The nemesis system is just there to rub it in your face when you loose.

Your only skill is the game that you can't die, but you already have that skill in every game, it's just not included in the lore. Including it in the story, doesn't make the game more exciting for me. It feels no different to any other game, and it has nothing else to offer.

Sooooooooooooo 9/10? :p

Lol...stfu. ;)

Great game though. I found it menacingly difficult once you die a few times. The orcs go up in rank and become gods basically. There's one camp in particular where there is a "boss" orc walking around with a few guards, and attacking him attracts a few of the other ones in the area, sort of a daisy chain effect. Really frustrating.

Do you always make decisions based on what someone else says?

Unfortunately, not every game can be a top-of-the-line, best story ever, fun-as-fuck all the way through kind of game, and that's a shame really. Other than that, this game isn't really as bad as you're making it seem. Then again, maybe I just don't care as much as I used to anymore. If I can have a few hours of fun, that's all that matters.

I really liked Shadow of Mordor, I do wish it was more challenging so it would have more replay value though. The game was too easy and got easier as you progressed to the point you can literally do big fights with your eyes closed. I know if it was more challenging it would probably break the nemesis system though because enemies get stronger when you die, but if you don't die early on the game is a walk in the park. There has to be a way to make it work, I did like the concept of it. I bought the DLC but couldn't get myself to play the game again.

Letting them kill you is actually part of the key to getting better runes. You interrogate grunts to find their weaknesses, do various things to help them level up, issue a death threat against them, confront them and let them kill you, then return and kill them via one of their weaknesses to get the best runes.

I agree. The whole idea is to feel like you have been inserted into a grand conflict. One thing you have to do with this game is accept that the failure state is integral to the gameplay experience. If you could so easily defeat all of the captains then this game wouldn't be very interesting. I actually sometimes get a good laugh seeing the results of my failures.

I don't see how someone can't like it. I mean everyone's entitled to their opinion, even if it's stupid (jk).

The nemesis system is great, but it's easy to get into. Interrogate everyone you can. You'll find that a lot of captains in the first zone can be taken out with a single arrow to the head. So then you have to plan how you approach them to take them out and just walk off without fighting another soul. Or the guys who can be killed by stealth finishers, or who can be taken out easily with cargors... I mistakenly approached a beast slayer on a caragor and that went poorly for me...

I don't really see any kind of change in their skills or difficulty if they kill me or if they increase in power some other way. I've been poisoned and died from more than one guy and went back and got them in place well enough to get them back with ease. The most frustrating part for me is how enemies don't die real easy. I went into the fishery and started a sword mission... OMG... so many fucking enemies and they just never seem to fucking die and they NEVER stop coming... even with the sped up ground kill perk I still had to run away from the 30 or so fuckers that were chasing me. And yeah if one kills me, he deserves to move up... GOOD! When I come back for my revenge you'll drop a nice rune for my weapon to better kill your buddies with!

I really enjoy it. The regular fights are easy as could be, but once there are a few archers around and some spearmen and some berzerkers and some shield guys all in one fight... shit gets much harder IMO

The nemesis system is great...

Meh, it gets old quick. The Nemesis system gives the ranks of the Uruks the illusion of depth. But once you've killed your way through the ranks a couple of times, it loses most of its luster as the new mostly randomly named Uruks with mostly randomly generated strengths and weaknesses fill in the gaps left by the random, forgettable ones before them.

Its really hard at first. Then when you start to understand the combat the grind gets addictive. Unlocking flurry and vault stun make the game a bit too easy, and it gets substantially moreso with additional unlocks. They need to tweak the combat balance.

It's not a bad game, I just couldn't find anything in it that justified the hype. I'd guess it's a solid 6/10 (Slightly Above Average) But I finished only two games last year, so I'm really picky about what I spend time on. 6/10 games just don't fit in my time anymore. I still haven't finished DA:I yet either.

I'd give it a good 7/10, based on how fun it was before it got samey and I ran out of things worth doing. And then I'd knock off 2 points for ending its main storyline with fucking QTEs.

You are not alone. I found the game to be boring as hell and very bland. I made it to about the 6 hour mark before I dropped it.

Ok, XBox controller on the way from Amazon.

This had better get better !!

6% into the game. We'll see.

Your experience of this game is (in my opinion) mostly dependent on whether -- and how much -- you played the Arkham games.

I played all three games a ton; I played City to near 100%. Since Mordor basically is Arkham: Tolkien Edition, if you're good at Arkham, you'll be really good at this too. I blew through Mordor like tissue paper. I did die a few times, but only when I got careless and dumb.

If you've never played any of the Arkhams, or if you only played them a little, you're definitely more likely to find it really tough, since they throw a lot of orcs at you right away.

In my opinion, it's a fun game -- and the Nemesis system is cool -- but my personal objection to the game is that the system works a lot better within the lore of Batman (dark, brooding, vengeful, stealthy) than it does within the lore of Tolkien (light v. dark, noble warriors, dauntless resistance, etc). It's not a comment I've heard elsewhere, but it's what I think ... I enjoyed Mordor, but it mostly made me look forward to the new Batman.

I was floored with the game. I was killing captains, leveling up, wrecking all of Mordor. Then I got in a fight with a captain after I'd scouted out the area. 90285 more captains show up and I get murdered. They all rank up. Fine, I was killing them all to easy anyway. Kill a couple more of the lower level baddies. Then randomly I'm murdering one and yet again, a million more show up just as I'm in the middle of killing one. Die again, and they all rank up again. I spend tons of time scouting out the next one, making sure everyone else is clear no captains around at all. The fucker was to powerful for me. Die again. Now everyone's more powerful then me and I'm fucked. Lost interest then. I was going to restart but didn't want to do all the beginning bullshit again.

Hahaha,,,, They can't have been that hard. Come on dude. Find a guy weak or you can hurt with arrow and go crazy.

Hell, if they are hurt by distanced attacks, Just do the teleport move. Usually hurts quite a bit. Not to mention there should be a couple you can instakill with a sneak attack.

It does get boring.
If it could do more things, like character customization, interact with the AI more and have co-op, I would have stuck around longer.

I found the combat quite fun an satisfying. However, I'd agree, at some point the game begins to lose some of its gusto. For me this point was when I first got to the second map. Seemed like it'd just be a ton more of the same stuff I just did. Suffers a bit too much from the Ubisoft formula.

It could have been a good game but isn't. FAR too repetitive and generic feeling. Not at all immersive.

I have a lot of fun in the beginning, but it got repetitive. I enjoy the story, and combat was fun, but I'm losing interest around 50% of the way in.

I love the nemesis system, but at a little over halfway in, I'm ready for things to wrap up.

Thats how I felt when I got done with the first zone. Was hoping for the game to start wrapping up. Was not prepared for a whole new zone of the same stuff. I should have progressed the story more instead of trying to do everything in the first zone
