I have a 3TB Toshiba 7200rpm (rebadged hitachi) drive that is kind of loud. It's a backup drive so I never use it unless I am playing a specific file every so often. The power savings on it will force it to turn off frequently, but then whenever I open certain applications it will freeze until the drive wakes back up again. Is there a way to manually force it into sleep mode and have it invisible to other apps? I can place the drive offline in drive management, or use diskpart to delete the volume, which both prevent access by programs, but is a hassle and takes 30 minutes for the drive to spin down on its own.
