Any problems with my planned upgrade?

I'm in the mood for an upgrade from my 2400+, 512, A7N8X setup. It's been so long since I've upgraded, and I haven't really kept up with all the new stuff coming out. I'd like to stay in the $350 range for cpu/ram/mobo. I'm might do some slight OCing, but nothing nothing extreme. I'm thinking:

Gigabyte GA-K8NS
1gb Corsair Valueselect pc3200
AMD Athlon 64 3400+ Newcastle

How does that sound, can I get a better bang for the buck? Thanks.

Maybe more money and a s939 setup? Spend a bit more money now..and skip an upgrade in the future...just an idea..

Thanks for the quick reply. First off the cpu and ram is out of stock at newegg. What if I get the mobo you suggested, and the ram and cpu I first came up with? Does that sound doable?

I'm not too familiar with the new socket types. What makes 939 better than 754? How big of a price difference am I looking at?

Socket 939 offers support for the newer technologies and stuff...one of the big ones is PCI-E. The chipset should be able to hold you out for a while...so if you wanted to upgrade something else you'd be able to do it. Socket 754 is technically a dead end now..but Eclipse must have his reasons.

I'll have to check around for a possible setup..shouldn't be THAT much more.

Eclipse's RAM

wow the DFI board is way cheap...did i pick the wrong one? also that setup *might* be overkil l for "slight" oc'ing.

s754 boards support pci-e too, there just aren't as many of them. the big thing is being able to upgrade the cpu within the next year or so. after that, i'm anticiapting M2 to be hitting retail, thus making the s939 argument useless.

you can get the cpu you picked out, but i highly recommend twinmos SP for overclocking. talk to robberbaron or ashmedai about it. they both have sticks that can do >250mhz at 2-2-2 on a dfi board.

edit: the nf4/s939 works too, especially considering how the venice cpu's have been overclocking as of late. :D

M2 that quick? whoaa  I thought it was going to be a little bit longer..

Well..hmm..that changes things...

Thanks. What kind of performance difference is there between:

and

seeing as the dual channel is good for about 2-5% performance, but the 3400+ has a 400mhz (20%) clock advantage, i'd say the 3400+ will be a respectable amount faster (~15% in cpu limited situations)
