Microsoft has abandoned the Windows Mobile platform. Which is fine because it was a complete piece of shit, but the problem is they seemingly have not replace the platform in the industrial devices industry. Barcode scanner and plant/factory data entry devices. We at my work just got a demo state-of-the-art unit from Honeywell...and it runs WinMo 6.5 with .NET 3.5. :(

Is there anything more recent out there that is rugged, certified intrinsically safe, and preferably does NOT have a camera (oil/gas refineries are very paranoid about cameras in their units)? We're even willing to look at Android or Embedded Linux at this point.

It seems that the latest thing from Microsoft is Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5, which is basically WM 6.5. We develop on this platform and can say it does have it's hiccups but usually is solid.

There are a ton of vendors that are invested in WM and will continue to be until a better alternative exists. Sadly the LOB handheld space is very barren.
