Hi, I'm in a mining pool with Jesse B and he pointed me here and thought there might be an opportunity to land some powered USB risers at a fair price. Please let me know if you have any left from your bulk purchase - I'm probably looking for 5 of them. Thanks!
 
When initially setting up a mining rig with such cables, can you still plug a monitor into one of the video cards when you are setting up the OS?
 
If anybody does one with BTC payment let me know, I'm out of paypal funds for a while

Mkrohn I can do btc/ltc as well. But again I want to wait until I receive the cables and ship to those who paid already, then do some over flow orders.

I could take at least 10 easily. I ordered 10 from the weed growin guy the other day and just ordered a few more ribbon cables but still need 10 more just to get the current cards setup properly.
 
Just a quick note the cables show shipped as of a couple days ago. Once they get here I'll take some pics and test a couple randomly :D just to make sure I'm not mailing everyone a bunch of garbage.

Pending that and If shipping works out ok (I'm not losing money shipping these) I'll contact those who posted to be on the waiting list in order until these are gone.

Something else I thought about is bad cables. The reality of ordering this many of something is that there is bound to be a couple bad eggs. Of course I hope this isn't the case, but I'm thinking I should hold maybe 5 or so until everyone gets and tests their cables. That way if you end up with a bad one I can ship you a replacement instead of waiting to get it replaced from China.

And if everything is successful in the end, I'll do another batch of 100 to make sure we all can get cables at a reasonable price.

Hi Guys,

I'm no expert on power. Which is why I'm worried. I wouldn't want my ignorance to cause a fire. I've got seven of these on the way (missed the group buy here, unfortunately, and couldn't wait, so I paid more).

I'm going to be using these to power seven GTX 750 Ti. These little guys pull a full 60w from the PCI-E slot (normally). Even up to 75w when overclocked. . . which is all the PCI-E slot is rated to provide safely. I've read (and it's on the internet so it must be true!) that until now no video card drew even close to this amount over the PCI-E bus and instead would get most of its power from the 6-pin and 8-pin connectors (which most 750 Ti don't have).

So, when using these risers powered by SATA-to-Molex cables, are we possibly looking at a fire hazard? I'm going to be sure to use high-quality molex splitters and extenders (preferably AWG 18 wire?). But is anyone concerned that PCB of these itself is not rated for so much current going through it?

I hope it's okay to ask this here. It seems to be the best place on [H] to find people familiar with these risers.

Again, I'm already sort of shooting from the hip on shipping to the US and don't want to quote you something thats completely wrong.

I hate Sapphire 280x cards, and MSI TF3 7950's were the KING.

I just paid $17 ea for 12 of those usb cables on ebay. really hating the expenses of mining. I guess it wouldn't be so bad if I had actually cashed some LTC out when it was >$30 ea.

Give it some time, LTC follows BTC which has been depressed (< $1k) for a while now. We'll see LTC go back up in the next few weeks to months. I'm not worried. Even with all this Mt. Gox crap going on.

P.S... so glad I pulled out of Mt. Gox in December.

I see where the prices on Ebay are starting to drop some from what the market would bear.
Maybe the gear sellers are getting nervous too. :)
 
I might be in for 3 here in a few weeks when the next window comes around, just ordered some more parts for a 2nd basket type rig. I actually have plenty of the ribbon PCI risers, but might need more flexibility with the cable distance, which is where the USB ones would come in :)

Do you have to use the molex->sata power adapters, or can you just plug molex directly in to the back? Is the adapter just there for convenience?

No, you can use direct molex. The adapter are there for convenience since most PSUs have an abundance of sata connectors.

Well that figures. Actually I've seen the price on these coming down everywhere, which is good.

Just an update for everyone waiting, I received tracking from the seller (finally) and he said they should be arriving end of this week, although I'd guess more realistically beginning of next week. Again, I'll test a couple just to make sure and ship them out as soon as I can.

The bad news is I don't have enough time to get all of these packed and shipped today. Should be able to get them out tomorrow. Which bring me to the other bad news....

I tried fitting 4 of these in a small flat rate box, and I probably could have, but it would have been super crammed and I don't want to risk bending or breaking anything. Which means most of these are going to get shipped in a medium flat rate box. Which means the price is going to go up slightly depending on how many are ordered (I'm guessing maybe $1-$2 total or so if that). I'll try and keep the pricing as close to me breaking even as possible, but those on the waiting list will be a little more. I'll update the OP once I get some more time with corrected pricing. Those who already paid you're getting yours for what you already paid. Any future orders will have to be at the slightly higher price.

First impressions. They were packed into a box pretty good. EVERYTHING Individually wrapped in its own anti static bag. I took out a few and didn't notice anything major wrong with them. I tested 4 of them. One had a bent round cap (capacitor?) on the x16 side, which I bent back slightly and it seemed fine. The card it's hooked up to has seen zero issues. A couple of the tabs that lock the card into place are broken off (I assume this is from shipping) but the card seats in there snug even without that tab holding it in. Again, tested and working without issue. The underside of the x16 part is felt (like a pool table) which I think is kinda weird, but pretty awesome if you're resting it against anything, which I'm guessing most of us will be.

Overall I'm actually pretty impressed with what we got. If the USB cables would have been black as well this would have been amazing. But still, I think we got a pretty good deal.

I'm gonna be busy tonight (solo dad duty) and have a couple things to do for work tomorrow, but again hopefully I can get done and get these shipped ASAP.

That's awesome. They sound like the other batch I got. I love the felt on the bottom, it's a dumb little thing but it makes it easy to not scratch stuff when resting with a heavy card on top of it.
 
Part number, PCB layout, and PCB color matches the ones I got from MagicGrowing. These are known good USB 3.0 risers.

I was able to plug the ones I got prior to the group buy into 1x PCI-e slots and mine no problem. It is literally plug and play.

I made an offer for 10 and got it down to $13 a piece I already have around 20 sitting here but I decided I'd work on completely ditching the ribbon cables
 
I can arrange 100 of the following picture with black cable 50 cm for $8-9 each including shipping.

And if its like 500 i can get the price down to probaly $7-8 including shipping for each piece.

If any of you want tracking the tracking info, PM me your zip code and I'll find it on the 3 mile long receipt I have. PLEASE at least confirm you've received your packages when you get them. If I don't hear back from you guys after a few days of receipt, I'll assume you're good and release the rest of the risers.

I'm also updating the pricing in the OP. Although at this point, theres been 2 guys in this thread saying they can get lower prices, so by all means if they are better go for it. Hell I wish these guys would have chimed in 2 weeks ago before I ordered. :rolleyes: Anyways, if any of you on the reserve list want to go with a cheaper alternative, my feelings won't be hurt.

Reserve list: Once the first "batch" is received and I get confirmation everyone is happy, I'll start PMing you guys for the rest. Again, if you want to go elsewhere, no problem. I just want us all to get a good deal. :)
