I am going to go with the 6950 and unlock it, if I can.

How do I determine if any of the 6950's on newegg are unlockable? Oh and should I get the 1GB or 2GB version? Didn't know if that had any effect on being able to unlock or not..

And where do I go for the directions to do this?

You can tell if it is reference if you see the AMD logo by the part of the card that plugs into the motherboard on the PCB.

Also, as stated above it has to be a 2GB card.

I just bought a Sapphire 6950 2Gb reference card yesterday on Newegg Canada's site, for any Canadian buyers. Newegg.ca still has Sapphire and HIS cards, and TigerDirect.ca also has HIS cards. But the supply is starting to dry up quickly, so anybody who wants one better move damned fast.

I just got a HIS 2GB board @ the Egg and it was reference and unlocked just fine.

Bummer, I just bought two 1gb cards, didn't know those couldn't be unlocked.

You may be able to, but your chances are lower than the 2GB models. You'll have to try modding your own BIOS in RBE in windows, at least according to that TechPowerUp guide..

If not anyone got some links they could post to possible unlockable one's via superbiiz or tigerdirect?

That is a non reference board so would be a gamble.
I did not see any on Super Biz that looked like reference cards that could be unlocked, there are a couple on Newegg still.

Here are some Tiger Direct ones:

The first one's a definite no.

The second one has all the signs of a reference build. Or is the one you would get not the same as pictured?

If you check out the customer reviews for the Visiontek one of them stated that the card you get won't be the reference one pictured.

damnit, I tried to quote the post and lost all the stuff I typed :( Anyway in a much shorter version: 1GB cards may be unlockable by editing the card's own BIOS. The TechPowerUp way of flashing a 6970 BIOS onto a 6950 wont work as there are no 1GB 6970s that I know of. They mention editing the card's own BIOS and I put together this guide that may help: http://verrytechnical.com/safely-unlocking-extra-shaders-in-reference-amd-6950-graphics-cards/

Unfortunately, your cards simply may not physically have the extra shaders :( Worth a shot though :)

Used... Plenty of people said to get them while they were still around when the unlock first came out. For games there is almost no difference. There's plenty of reviews around to attest to that. For bitcoin mining the different is pretty noticeable but if you don't do that I wouldn't worry about having the unlock or not.
