Well my 360 died today and take a wild guess what game killed it. Yup. Good old Guitar Hero 2. Its my own fault really. I'd read about the alarming 360 death rate after GH2 was released and that put me off buying it. My brothers 360 died 2 days after getting GH2 too which was scared me away from borrowing it while his was repaired.

Anyway. On sunday my brother brought GH2 round and i figured since he's brought it i may as well have a try. I mean what can happen right? So we play for a 2 or 3 hours and it was great fun. I loved the game and decided to borrow it. Last time i played was monday night for a couple of hours.

Now today i recieved Colin Mcrae DIRT. Great. I fire up my 360 and put the game in and about 20 yards down the very first track my 360 crashes. Uh oh:eek:. Dont like the look of that. So i turn the machine off. I wait a few minutes and try again. Same thing. Maybe its the game?. So i try something else. Another crash. Ok. One more time. I try a demo. Crash number 3. Then ring of death. SOAB

Sorry but there is no way i'm gonna accept that anything other than GH2 is to blame. No chance. Mine and my brothers 360's dying right after playing that game. Coincidence my ass. The Guitar Hero games can go to hell now. Should have listened to that nagging doubt in the back of my head.

Well i'm gonna have to pay £86 to get it repaired now. Hopefully i'll get it back with one of those new heatsinks. Or maybe i just wont bother and ebay all my games.

Damn that sucks..i never heard about gitar hero crashing xbox 360's i have one and i never picked up that game (never liked it) my 360 has froze through, on NFS most wanted, Fight night, once during MK3 online, and during a download of crackdown but it still has yet to freeze

its not your fault, its not GH2 fault, its Microsoft's fault and right now they should fucking fix it for free

Its my own fault really

You must be whipped pretty bad by Microsoft to be convinced that its your own fault for playing a game on your gaming console.

Nah. Its like if you wanted to know what would happen if you upset a grizzly bear. You've heard its a bad idea, you know its a bad idea and wouldnt ever consider going out looking for one. But if you happen to come across a bear one day, you've only yourself to blame if you get ripped to pieces for kicking it in the balls.

indeed... though he didn't heed the warning signs, but thats no way your fault when its something that should work doesn't work.

Personally though, I've never had any problems with GH2 on x360. Did you dl any content? like songs or something?

Only thing i downloaded was the patch. I removed the hard drive and just used a memory card instead but still crashes in everything.

Well i've calmed down now. It just irritated me coz i wanted to play Colin Mcrae and Amazon finally got some Wii's in stock. Now i'll have to wait a couple of weeks to play Mcrae and cant afford the Wii till next month now because of the repair fee.

Not to worry. These things happen.:D

that sucks big time! seems far too many go through this console dying. just another con IMHO not to buy one. that's quite expensive to fix it but whatcha going to do. feel 4 ya

moral? wanting to be a guitar god costs dearly ..cheers!

lego star wars has a glitch in some disk in the final cut scene that has been bricking 360s left and right. A guy i work with crashed his right after the last update, lent the game to another guy same thing.

I noticed a lot of 360s died after loading a new game in usually. Probably got corrupted from a firmware update or something happened. Microsoft needs to really up their quality control thats for sure. They should have test the system more for problems but they didn't and wanted a year ahead start. I think this will bite them in the back sooner or later. A lot of my friends 360s died also. So your not the only one in the same ball park. They also said they won't buy a new one lol.

Heres an article right here about the fail rate. There was a poll done;) and a stunning 61% of the xbox 360s failed. 61% lol
Xbox 360: 61 per cent failure rate

Microsoft is in trouble in thats for sure. Thats enough percentage to convince people not to buy their console basically. What do you guys think :)

i feel your pain op i just loaded up gh2 to play some gnr it froze so i turn it off then back on and bam ring of death starts laughing at me. Fortunately mine is still under warranty but im still pissed about it.

Umm that survery was answered by less than 3800 people of how many 360 owners?

Well, with Microsoft sticking to its 4 – 5% failure rate story, we figured we’d have another look at our survey, which has at the time of writing attracted 3780 submissions and 2355 comments – the majority of which are from angry owners who feel cheated by the Xbox 360’s build quality and Microsoft’s after sales service.

Sure, there have been failures, people are taking issue with it and I don't blame them, but don't try to present the numbers in your own fashion without stating the facts behind it first.

Might want to re-word your statement there. That's not a study. It's a poll taken by a website. For all that site knows, it's Kaz Hirai and Jack Tretton voting.

lol still, there has been so many failures i have seen lately from personal experiences and online that i came to the conclusion that its a real problem. ;) Microsoft should have fixed this along time ago thats for sure. Its been a year already and still 360s are dieing left and right.

Sure its not scientific, but i'd be willing to be the end result is very close. 360's are dying all around me. I'm on number 3, my brother just sent his in for repairs, and my coworker just got 3 red lights of happiness.

I feel your pain. Mine did this too. Like just last week. Although Xbox 1 games work fine. After my girlfriend finishes Buffy, this thing gets swapped.

Umm.. Blame a game for breaking your Xbox.. Just dumb. The larger issue is the fact that Microsoft's software and hardware are the issue. If they built the system right there should be no way a 3rd party companies software can cause any damage to their console. Its quite obvious who to blame for your broken Xbox.

Thanks Microsoft for Windows ME and Xbox 360. :D

I dont blame the game its just the game i happened to be playing at the time. I am in know way blaming gh2 my bad if it sounded like it.

lol yup, they're trying to hide behind their 3 red lights of death. But its actually microsoft's windows CE crashing with a blue screen of death in the background ;). Haven't ever in the history of console gaming seen so many consoles die like this before. Well actually the ps2 was bad but this is getting pretty close to the same level now. Its just a matter of time before all of the 360's everyone bought fails :). Its just a matter of time ;)

The people who complain are the minority. not that majority. those who are fine, have no reason to speak, as they are contented. you only hear about failure, and complete astonishment.

the problem will be permanently fixed in time. im not sure if they elite hot fix worked, but we shall see...

60% is ridiculous.

I'm on my 3rd Xbox360, but even I'm not going to believe that's true for a second.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's in the 10-15% range. 20% is really pushing it. 60% is just plain silly.

I don't think the problem will be fixed with the dieing 360's until the next cores comes out with a smaller die and better cooling. The whole xbox should have been bigger since now its smaller it generates more heat since its faster and plus since its in a confined space. Poor ventilation in the case. Probably in a year or 2 we'll see some changes but for now prepare to see more 360s to go down the pipes. ;) Thats why whenever you get microsoft stuff, always get a warranty. An extremely long warranty :).

we could always do an informal poll here. See if we can get the [H] crew to jump on this on our behalf.

One is a poll to see what percentage of readers on the [H] are console gamers also. I am betting that number will be rather high.

Second of those that are of the [H] and own a 360 have had a 360 fail to the point of needing replacement.

I think that would be a great idea :). I'm pretty sure the numbers would be staggering if you ask me. Around like 30-40 percent most likely. It would be cool though to see some poll numbers :).

Sure it can, I mean oc programs are 3rd party program. But if you use it, its obviously the OC program that screwed over the system. While I do admit htat windows dones' run perfectly and the hardware is hardly perfect but it should run alot better than it would with failed ocing.

I don't know how much a game can have on the x360, and I doubt it has enough access to cause teh problem but its fact that quite a few people got screwed over after playing GH2.

I will say my first 360 died thanks to gh2. But my second has been strong. And I played a TON of hours on the first playing GH2. Problably 20 or 30 easy.

Seems strange than a game would cause the system to fail. I mean does GH2 really tax the hardware? Doubtful. There could be unknown reasons to be sure that this game might cause some problem. I dunno. The game I've had the most crashes with on the 360 is, by far, Burnout Revenge.

What we could do is ask the people in the "Post your gamertag" thread to chime in. Since they have XBOX live accounts, we can be sure they aren't just haters trying to skew the numbers. There's about 200 people on that list, so that should give us a pretty decent idea of how many of these things are failing (ratio-wise).

Hell, I'm the guy who started that thread, and my 360 died months ago.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Good idea? Bad idea?

Pretty good idea to me. It'll give us an idea thats for sure of how many people are out of the majority are having the failures :).

No they wont.
Mostly because the damn internet found out the root of the problem before Microsoft did, and they still have not done anything about it. (Its the X clamp heatsink. Too much presure on the chip, coupled by the bending of the motherboard.)

It is an EASY fix. (Replace the Xclamp with a heatsink that does not apply that amount of presure on the mainboard.)
Microsoft is retarded. To the definition. (Slow to solution....)

Quite honestly, I've wanted a 360 since I sold the launch unit I bought on release. I wont go near one till they replace the heatsink design. This is retarded engineering at its finest.

AWESOME...

Got the full 3 rings of death. This rocks!

:( :(

completely dead now

Seriously... I believe the failure rate is higher then 3%, but there's no way in HELL it's anywhere near 60%. Do you realize what you're saying?! If it was at 60%... even 30 or 40% there would be such an uproar. Hell we'd probably be discussing an Xbox 360 recall.

Don't get me wrong, I think the system was poorly designed, and/or poorly tested, and the R&D team didn't run the 360 through the various paces properly. Either that or they just didn't care. I have a 360... well technically I have a dead 360, but I'll be getting a replacement Saturday... and I love a lot of the games that are out for it now, and there's some great games coming very soon, and I look forward to playing more games... but there is definitely a hardware problem going on with this thing.

So now we need to have a dead 360 thread for every game that happens to kill it? What if mine died while streaming porn, should I create a thread as well?
