The hacktivist group Anonymous has taken down over 40 child pornography sites within the last week. The attacks are part of Operation Darknet that seek out child pornography on what is called the Dark Internet which is unreachable by outsiders and search engines. Kudos to Anonymous, this would prove the old saying that "even a broken watch is right twice a day”.

Basically these kids DDOS'd a bunch of servers and released a bunch of google-able usernames that may not necessarily even be linked to child porn. Nothing to see here really, but it's a surprising twist to the usual demonizing of these kind of groups.

Of course, vigilantism doesn't mean they'd be in the clear if they themselves viewed and/or have remnants of child porn on their own systems. While there isn't anyone who will defend child porn directly (hence why it is used as an emotional argument/strawman in almost every Internet-relate law/bill), this isn't a place where the common person should be treading. I don't care if they're a script kiddie, scene whore, or actual skilled attacker.

Even in the IT and digital security worlds, you need to stop what you're doing, walk away, and seek FBI assistance when you encounter child porn on a system or network. Otherwise you risk punishment yourself.

And the impact if they smear some innocent person?

Bad move. It doesn't curb the production of child pornography, and could very well interfere with ongoing law enforcement efforts. Inform the proper authorities if you find CP and let them deal with it.

You want Anonymous to seek FBI assistance? Aren't the FBI after them?

This is child pornography websites, who could possibly be innocent here? These aren't even websites that are searchable from Google. So if you registered to this site then there's no excuse.

This should be front page on every newspaper but none of the mainstream news channels are running this story. That has to tell you something about this 'Take Down' As of 10:46 AM, The Hidden Wiki, Freedom Hosting and Lolita City are online.

http://www.foxnews.com/ - No mention of it
http://www.cnn.com/- No mention of it
etc...

Someone over at anonymous knows how to play the media: Do one deed that EVERYONE will stand behind for every 2 or 3 anarchist moves just so you can get the heat off your backs while you plan the next act of digital vandalism.

I have no delusions about Anonymous...

This. This is one crusade by anon I have no problem with. Good riddance.

It's all well and good but what if in their haste or total lack of real skill or investigative duty they throw YOUR username up on some list.

Suddenly you lose your family, job, and are in jail getting sweet sweet man love all because someone erroneously put your name on a list.

People actually support this?

I could ride through the hood and pop a few crack heads, robbery, rape, and other crime in the area might generally decline but does that make it okay?

I'm surprised nobody posted a sad pedobear pic yet :-p

Awesome. Now if these kids can continue to use their knowledge to do good instead of evil, I will support them.

Are they going to take down their own website because there is always some underage chick stripping on 4chan.

This, I support.

Releasing boatloads of personal information on police, I don't, unless it's just those of them who are scum and filth, but you know, to a lot of young teens every cop is a bad cop.

Does make one wonder, how they know where these "deep net" kiddy porn sites are in the first place.

Hell yeah, If they did stuff like this on a monthly basis (which they are totally capable of in more ways than 1)-- I would change my entire view of these "hacker" guys.

Hell, I wouldn't mind donating $1 if they constantly crashed child porn site.... that's a worthy cause for the GOOD, me thinks!

Who knows if those names were planted there by Anonymous. Those websites were probably being run by the FBI anyways.

Indeed. If the sickos running the sites think they're being targeted by someone they'll pull anchor and move their operation, which could ruin ongoing efforts to catch them. The first rule of hunting is don't spook the prey. These fools are as incompetent as they are stupid.

A worthy cause indeed! Go get them Anonymous!! The "hidden" parts of the internet is a very twisted and disturbing space. Don't seek it out. A hacker friend of mine showed me some things once that I wish I could "un-see". This world has some sick ass freaks in it! ... Ignorance is bliss!

they are just trying to collect more stuff for the next time they decide to modify a kid's page on youtube.

okay? no. outcome for everybody else besides you and the crackheads? better. so meh

like the deep net is some black hole? its not hard to find all kinds of horrible things on the interwebs

This time they at least picked a proper villain.
To bad they are still just scumbags themselves.
Even now, I can not get behind these guys.

Like the policeman told my brother after they arrested him for beating his crack dealer half way to death, "Great job man, but you still have to go to jail."...

I support them on this!
Its funny, in my state drivers who where caught driving intoxicated have a yellow licence plate to warn others that they have been caught drinking and driving in the past, nothing is done to pedophiles cars and this is something easily done. Make them drive around with pedophile licence plates.
Then teach our children to avoid those people and their cars.

Yeah. This sort of thing is really bad for vigilantes to get involved in. Some CP guys get spooked and slip the net and it could lead to more children being victimized. Plus there's always the risk of getting caught up in an investigation yourself if you are tracked connecting to one of these sites, even if its just to DDoS it.

Getting mistakenly added to some sex offender registry is pretty much a situation where your only option is to go kill yourself because its game over. Not a good risk to be taking.

what state is that?

After reading that article I wonder how many pedophiles out there now know where to find this stuff where they couldn't find it before.
