Sorry, but that article and research is just plain stupid.

Looking across applications, Table 3 enumerates the 20 most frequently contacted
domains, which provides some insights about the nature of communication
between the application and website. Unsurprisingly, 9 of the top 10 in this
set correspond to various web services run by Google. The most popular domain
in the list, doubleclick.net, is an advertising platform that tracks endusers,
and also serves up advertisments

So this is equivalent of iOS applications using iAd or WP8 applications using any of the available ad platforms.

What a surprise, ad supported applications support ads. Complete surprise.
