Right now I have a 1700/370x on pre-order (total is about 550 bucks with tax). For the same amount I can get a 6800K and 2011-V3 motherboard...I have to admit I am kinda tempted to cancel my pre-order and get the 6800K.

I mean the cinebench numbers are impressive and all but I don't use it. What do y'all think? would the 1700 (non x version) beat out a 6800K?

I would buy both. Make the slower one be your server.

The reviews aren't out yet so this question cannot be answered.

I'm just gun shy on drivers....the bleeding edge can be a terrible place to live. At least with 2011-v3 i know the drivers are older and probably more stable. then the geek in me thinks NEW AND SHINEY Gotta have it...meh you are right I will stick with my pre-order my seocnd system can run overwatch still..

I think it depends on what you want it for. If you need stability and something that won't need any real tweaking to ensure it is working obviously go with the more tried and true platform right now, but you may be missing out on slighter better performance for roughly the same price.

when was the last time you had chipset driver issues? I really don't remember the last time that was the case. You should be good. They have running ryzen demos for a long ass time now I am sure they have had plenty of time to have a stable product at launch.

NB4 Intel crusaders flop in to tell us that this is just a normal, isolated anecdotal sale and has nothing to do with Ryzen.

THIS. Straight up, the last time I had chipset driver issues was on the ALiveDual-eSATA2 AGP + PCI-E 2-in-1 board, with a weird chipset that stopped being supported after NVIDIA bought the company, roughly a decade ago. What a weird board, in retrospect. Reminds me of those DDR2 + DDR3 boards, which I eyed but never bought. Being on a tight budget sucks, had to make the most of my gear!

EDIT:

Correction, it was the 939Dual-SATA2 - another year prior. Damn it sucks getting old, 2006 was a good while ago.

That was a great board, it was the only board I'm aware of with both AGP and PCIe slots that one of them wasn't gimped. Even the AM2 version that Asrock made had the PCIe slot hacked into the AGP bus IIRC.

The Ali chipset was the source of more than a few headaches but the board was solid otherwise. I used the 9700 pro from my previous system in it at first and had a 8800gt in it when I replaced it, my parents were still using it(with Vista) until i built them a Skylake system last year.

Yep, it was quite the solid board. Now that I'm thinking about it more, it was pretty unique. Full AGP and PCI-E bandwidth (well, there was a negligible drop I think), you could stably run both an AGP AND a PCI-E video card simultaneously, with some tweaking as required. That was impressive!
OC'ed the hell out of one of those cheap 939 Opterons of the day, getting super-expensive FX-level performance out of them on air. And now that I think about it, I believe I impulse purchased an 8800 GT when I drooled over the just-released reviews one late evening.
I guess things haven't changed all that much - I still drool over equipment and impulse buy too many parts I don't need. All of the parts.

Oh wow, that's not some insignificant $10 or $20 here and there.

Yeah the one thing about Intel is they will play dirty. Not sure what they can do if the 1800x beats out their 1100 dollar cpu.

Those are more like $50ish price cuts.

A month or two after Skylake was released (probably closer to a month) I made a build with said tech for my mother. I thought I used pretty good hardware, a 6600k i5, $170 MSI mobo and G.Skill Ram. None of these brands have I ever had a problem with. Shortly after building it my mother was noticing "ghosts" in the machine. Just weird things happening with the mouse, like jumping around on the screen - which I did see myself as well. I believe she was also having some issues with Sims 4 (of course that could be Sims 4...) And still I have problems just turning the damn thing on. I thought maybe it was a power supply issue so I changed that out - OCZ to Seasonic - no change. And note I didn't have any problems with the case's power switch before this build.

Anyway, to your point with being gun shy on drivers.... After using brand new arch as soon as it's been released I'm gun shy on doing such again. I think it's definitely something to be cautious of.

The other thing to consider is that's a 65w vs 140w TDP part...

What price cut? Haven't most of those been the street prices for ages? All along People have been comparing the Ryzen to the $1000 6900K.

Here is a story from back in August:

"
AMD’s Zen Outperforms Intel’s $1000 i7 6900K In Its First Ever Demo – Zen Architecture Detailed

i7-5820: $319, a year ago on wayback machine:

Basically ALL those prices have been street prices for months. There hasn't been any price drop.

Honestly i would wait for another month or so before buying anything. Intel prices might drop significantly and i would look for i7 5960k.

Actually, about a month ago putting in some new Dell 930 32 core servers with the current 7th gen intel xenon 16 core CPU's. The chipset driver was causing an anomaly in the Device manager. I had to down rev a specific device manager driver to clean up the anomalous report.

I actually cancelled my pre-order. I don't really have a burning need to ugprade and figure it might be best to wait and see. My 1080 GTX gets 122 fps in Overwatch at 4k now and pretty much all I play other than internet and Kodi on my alienware i7 steam box..might be better to wait for an actual price war! :D

Sorry, that's basically standard Microcenter sale pricing.

Why support inflated pricing on a hexacore from last generation on a dead end socket? Ryzen doesn't seem like highway robbery pricing.

meh according to benchmark leaks - in gaming - the intel is still faster http://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-7-1700x-1700-official-gaming-benchmarks-leak/

not by much - it is pretty even - but given the money - it is cheaper to get a 6800K and 2011-v3 mobo than a 1700x/370x mobo

6800K/2011 V-3
Subtotal $539.98
Tax $43.20
Grand Total

$583.18

My preorder for a 1700/370x was 658 bucks..that is a pretty significant price difference. (and for the 1700 if I had gotten the X it would have been 100 dollars more).

Don't get me wrong amazing what AMD has done but I am cheap. If I can get like for like for less money I am in.

Groebuck, if you are looking for bottom dollar performance today then you are correct. If you are looking for longer term growth for your performance dollar and 100-200 isn't a huge difference.. then the extra money is worth while.

If Gaming is all you care about, Why not save much more and get a i5 7600K, and run at ~5GHz. That is likely the gaming bang/buck champ.
