Ok, so I went with PFSense as my poor stock wrt54g v5 couldnt handle my households demand. I want to still use the 54g as a wireless access point and a switch. I understand disabling DHCP etc, but wanted to know what was the more correct IP to set the 54g at, 192.168.1.2 or 192.168.2.1 ??? Networking is my weak point. FWIW the PFSense box will be set to 192.168.1.1 obviously, and I am pretty sure the modem is set to 192.168.2.2

Thank you in advance

If your subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 then the third octet needs to match as well. So prolly 192.168.1.xxx

When taking a wireless router and "hanging" it off the inside of the LAN to use as an AP, I assign it an IP that is common to access points. Often something like .245 or .253.

Any static IP address outside of your DHCP pool is fine. You don't want to accidentally assign an IP address to a client computer on top of the IP address of your access point. I usually use x.x.x.2-10 or x.x.x.250-254 for access points, printers, and other statically assigned addresses. Those addresses are usually outside of the DHCP pool of most home consumer routers, linux routers, and Windows DHCP servers.
