AMD R9 290X Beating The GeForce GTX 780?

They had $160 7950s on NewEgg last night. I had such a poor experience with all the 7970s I've had... I was tempted. But I know only a microstuttering mess will ensue. Unless the GTX 290x can get crossfire up to SLI standards... it will only be worth what that single card deliver.

I know I can add another GTX 780 and have a pleasant experience. I can't say that about AMD.
I know how you feel. Own a 5970, hate every bit of it. Especially on 120hz monitor.
About to grab a 290x or 770 SLI

Don't care, other than the competitive aspect with Nvidia pricing. I got fucked on the Radeon 8500 and X800XT PE drivers/hardware failures, and ATI can eat a bag of dicks forever as far as I'm concerned.

I have the same thinking right now. The 280x look very attractive for 1440p gaming, but i was burned to dead by ati back in the days and with my 5850's. So iam really cautious about it, i want it, but still not sure.

You know when you buy a good car and it f**/+ beyond you're understanding, then change dor another model that work well and the x car maker makes a newer one that is very good and awesome, you tell yourself. Yeahhhhhh... About that... Lol

Hey you can't blame N for high prices.
You blame the morons that pay it for the high prices.

both the 780 and the 290 should be $299 but since the idiots will pay whatever thats not the price.

But if the 290x is priced around the 780 gtx....its a fair comparison

Both Titan and 780 are overpriced, when compared to performance of previous generation. If somehow nVidia realize the threat that 290 and 290X will pose on its latest generation cards, and reduce the price of these cards, and accordingly AMD prices 290 and 290X in context to revised price of nVidia cards, which might come out to be within the range of 450-550$. But I am skeptical about this price war.

Well I am hoping these new AMD cards drive the prices down.

even right now $400 for a 2gb 770, or $450 for a 4gb 770....when you can get a 280x 3gb for $299....

Ill be honest, It would not shock me if Nvidia did not drop the prices of the 780 GTX.

Competition is good. I'll probably sit out this round though, but I'm really anxious to see what a pair of 290x's in Xfire can do.

one reason I never buy overpriced cards.
if they fit the 290 in between the 280x and 780, its pretty much the card of the year to buy.

Official AMD Radeon R9 290X 2160p performance in 17 games

Radeon R9 290X

Yesterday AMD allowed reviewers to share benchmark results in two games: BioShock Infinite and Tomb Raider. Today guys from PCTuning shared some results from other titles, only this time it is not exactly with AMD approval

Data is taken from Radeon R9 290X reviewers guide, these numbers are for reference only. You should probably take them with a grain of salt, but it won’t get anymore official than this.
So to make it short, the average R9 290X performance advantage over GeForce GTX 780 is 23,8%, and this is just 2160p resolution. Some games, like Sleeping Dogs, show 152% better performance than with NVIDIA’s card! Apparently there is no title on the list that would offer better experience with GeForce GTX 780, only Splinter Cell Blacklist is somehow limiting the performance of R9 290X and making it just 4% faster, well it’s NVIDIA’s game for a reason.

By the way, these benchmarks were performed in performance mode (it’s actually called UBER-mode), not in Quiet-mode you have seen yesterday with Bioshock and Tomb Raider benchmarks. In this mode graphics card’s clocks go slightly higher regardless of the noise generated by the fan.

Enough talking, let’s see the charts and the table.

Obviously to be taken with a grain of salt until official benches are released.

AMD better play their card right. If the 290x goes for $729 to $799 I might really consider Nvidia if they do a price drop. I've seen some Titans running for $800 on ebay and that 6gb of vram is tempting for triple screens/4k setup.

i got a GTX 780 for 540.00 is this overpriced?

might be considered a steal after todays G-sync annoucement if it works as advertised

I just cant see mysellf upgrading to a titan r290x right now just because at my res 1920x1200 i am more then satisfied

people with 2500x res monitors should get the most they can out of a video card

AMD or Nvidia benches from the guide are borderline useless.

http://www.dsogaming.com/news/major...nce-up-to-60-performance-boost-from-a-gtx580/

This was the performance slide for the gtx 580 vs 7970 upon release. The 7970 came in about 20 percent faster than a gtx 580 upon release. But the AMD slides indicated about 45% faster.

Particularly because they are using a resolution thats going to stress a gtx 780 ROPs, I would say in real world results, expect to shave anywhere from 15-30% off these results.

Most people don't use 4k displays(the equivalent of 2 2560*1440 monitors) and these hardly represent most peoples usage scenarios.

At 2560*1440 and reviewers doing the testings, I am certain we will get closer results.

resolution lowered 290x increased the lead.

Hmmm... I expect the opposite. With all the 4K talk from AMD, I believe that the R290X's largest lead over Nvidia's cards will be at 3840x2160 (4K). Once the res drops to 1440 and 1080, I would think that the framerates between the 780/Titan/R290X will begin to get closer.

But I guess we'll have to wait until the official review hit the web before we know for sure.

I agree, the higher ROP count and memory bandwidth will really come into play at 4K, but down from that the advantage will diminish. It's obvious AMD has more of an advantage here as they are mandating reviewers to publish any early test results at 4K.

It's great that AMD is forward thinking about supporting higher resolutions though. I'd love to get a 4K monitor but not at the current prices, so for me the 1600p results are what will matter.

Dual card numbers at 4K are all I care about. (2) 7950 is already over 60fps at 1600p for $380. There's little reason to buy a $700 card if you're already using Crossfire/SLI.

I'm sure every review is going to primarily focus on 1600p since a single card is obviously not playable at 4K.
