How many monitors do they support out of box? Does either need a adapter like active display port adapter is needed on Amd's older cards?

Amd r9 290/x and Nvida's 780, How many monitors at once

I currently have 3 monitors and my tv hooked up to my 290.
R9 series
if you are using the 3 dvi/hdmi ports you would need an active adapter for DP
http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/r9/pages/amd-radeon-hd-r9-series.aspx#53 with DVI/HDMI, 4 using DisplayPort, 6 with an MST hub
