Amazon - SK hynix Platinum P41 PCIe NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 Internal SSD 1TB ($102) and 2TB ($170)

I thought this was a steal at $200 during Prime Day! I guess I’m buying another drive to fill up another nvme slot on my motherboard…

Kingston KC3000 is as fast , 7000/7000 on raw speed, and cheaper right now and 2TB

Except, it's not... :cautious:

It's a pity I'm saving up for a Radeon 6700XT or I'd jump on this deal.

Just got the P41 Platinum 1TB two weeks ago .... Quite a nice drive, almost tempted to get another now lol

Just picked one up for my GE76 laptop. This is a no brainer. One of the top gen 4 ssd's on the market. I was waiting on a deal on the WD Black SN850X 2tb but more than happy with this.

Was aiming for 1 TB but it's a great price, so I bit. Too bad the 1 TB model wasn't $85 (170 divided by 2).
The 2 TB KC3000 runs about $170-$180 on sale, it's currently $168 on Kingston's store.

Does anyone know how the Hynix compares to the Samsung 990 Pro? I haven't found a benchmark comparing them.

Does anyone know how the Hynix compares to the Samsung 990 Pro? I haven't found a benchmark comparing them.

A quick search shows brings up reviews from Storage Review and Tom's. Everything I've seen about it is positive. Overall both, along with the latest WD Black, are all about the same, +/- a few percentage points in benchmarks.

That's a useful graph. TweakTown's Samsung 990 Pro review with a link to open their image gallery, which features all their comparison charts of the 990 Pro vs the Hynix Platinum P41, and other drives, is here: https://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/10226/samsung-990-pro-2tb-ssd-higher-level/index.html

The 990 Pro is a new 'best drive'. But the 1 TB version currently costs what the 2 TB Hynix Platinum P41 does on sale at Amazon.com.

I almost bought the P41 from Amazon.ca, where it's 37% off. But then I noticed the Amazon.com price is $110 CAD cheaper than the Amazon.ca price. So, I cancelled my order and will probably order a couple from the US to someone who will ship them up to me, and get 2 for the price of 1.2 from the .ca site.

Yeah, I'm seeing glowing reviews too, among the small number of them that seem to exist for the Hynix Platinum P41. But I specifically want to see how it compares to Samsung's 990 Pro, which just released. The image posted by Tainted Squirrel offers the only direct comparison I've seen, so far.

The Hynix Platinum P41 sounds pretty great, but its performance drastically drops off after 50 seconds of sustained writing. So, for transferring large files, I wonder if the Seagate FireCuda 530 or Kingston KC3000 is better. But then, how often is someone transferring files that size? If games start to take as long to load on m.2 SSDs as GTAV and RDR2 currently do on HDDs and slower SSDs, then it could start impacting things. But that's probably a long way off.

These Amazon reviews complaining that the Hynix Platinum P41 doesn't get its advertised speed, what was likely causing that? Do people here who own P41s get the advertised speeds?

I saw it mentioned somewhere that the Samsung 980 Pro is a bit more reliable than the Hynix P41. What metric would that be based on - some failure rate stat?

The 2nd Amazon review looks like it's running at Gen3 speeds, ~3 GB/s in R/W.

I'd avoid the 980 Pro it has a widespread failure problem. Samsung tax also makes it way overpriced.

What's the price difference? P41 is a better drive.

I ordered the P41 after going over several reviews comparing the two. The P41 2TB is cheaper by $10 compared to the SN850X 2TB while also being slightly faster, slightly more efficient, and the former has support for AES 256-bit encryption FWIW, but I guess, I couldn't have done wrong either way.

I also went for the P41, and got two of them in preparation for my Zen 4 X3D build. I won't have a PC to use them in until then, so I hope X3D Zen 4 isn't far from being released.

PC world recommends this drive. It must be nice. I went with the 980 pro but I wish I got either this or the Wd m.2.

Looks like the sale on Amazon.com is over. Glad I put in an order yesterday. Odd that the sale is ended, though, because I saw it advertised that it would last until the 27th. I even took a screenshot of the advert, in case I needed it. But I deleted it after I put in my order.

Still shows the same price, same day delivery, and in stock

Ah, yeah. It looks like Amazon was automatically converting the price to another currency based on my selected address. Not sure that I've had it do that before, and it was defaulting to USD when I placed my order in USD a couple of days ago, even before changing my shipping address to a US one.

"Best" depends on use case. 990 Pro actually gets beat by Firecuda 830 or Rocket 4 Plus in sustained writes once the cache is exhausted. Important to me because I write large files constantly, and do full image restores often. When considering price yet it can't even beat a two year old drive in an important metric, 990 Pro not even in ballpark for me.

To make a fully informed buying decision you owe it to find out the speed of the underlying NAND. 99% of review sites just do the same lame benchmarks of CDM & ATTO etc that merely bench the controller & cache.

There's more variance than people realize because the NAND is typically 85-90% of BOM and so thats where the vendor shenanigans will be to make their margin - cheaper and slower NAND hidden behind incrementally faster controller and cache.

To the best of your knowledge, which 2tb nvme drive is the best overall performer including the cache issues etc? I bought a 980pro and worried about possible issues, so I am considering returning it as I am still in teh return period window.

What drive are you using? are you happy with it?

Bought a couple of this SK hynix. Was considering Samsung 980 Pro M.2 2TB until I saw its abysmal Linux ext4 performance.

After some digging on DirectStorage performance, I ended up returning mine and switching to the SN850X for the same price.

What did you discover about it?
NVMe drives with Phison controllers outperform other drives in DirectStorage, Toms did a simulated benchmark:

https://www.tomshardware.com/features/the-directstorage-advantage-phison-io-ssd-firmware-preview/2

https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/c...e_the_directstorage_advantage_phison/ij5v12l/

At the top of the list is the KC3000, which uses a Phison E18 controller. You'll notice the Hynix P41 is getting destroyed.
Supposedly the SN850X's "Game Mode 2.0" setting provides the same benefits for DirectStorage as the Phison drives.

Currently, the P41, KC3000, and SN850X are all the same price ($168-$170). The P41 is the best overall drive, but the worst for DirectStorage. The KC3000 is potentially better for DirectStorage, but the worst overall drive of the 3. Assuming the SN850X's game mode can match Phison in DirectStorage, it's the best deal.

There may be better deals on other Phison-based drives out there, but I can only go off what Toms benchmarked. I'm also too lazy to dig through every Phison drive looking for a sale.

Seems like an odd choice to dump a drive that ranks the best or within a few percentage of being so in virtually every benchmark just because it wasn't as great in one class of tests, especially when the replacement wasn't even tested and there's only promises and assumptions to go off of.

There's a brief mention of the SN850X regarding DirectStorage in Tom's Hardware's review of it.

The SN850X is a little bit weaker in the 4K tests and actually seems to do better with Game Mode engaged. The SN770, which has the same flash, does remarkably well. All of these drives provide enough performance for a good experience, although the P5 Plus notably falls behind the rest. We cannot say much for high IOPS being necessary at this time, however it is likely the SN850X would do better in simulated DirectStorage tests than the original SN850 and other non-Phison drives.

Does anyone think Hynix could possibly improve the DirectStorage performance of the P41 with a firmware update, maybe giving it an alternate scheduler mode / game-mode like the SN850X has?
