Amazon has patented a method for the voice assistant Alexa to detect emotional and physical states based on vocal cues that it hears. It will then tailor its conversations in such a way to appeal to the person. For example if a person sounds like they are bored then Alexa will deliver an ad for a musician that specifies that their music is for bored or sleepy people. It will also be able to read and interpret search results to verify the emotional state of the person.

If a person says, "What's going on today?" Alexa will interpret this as the person is bored and suggest a movie to the person. In another example a person tells Alexa that they are hungry, but they cough and sniffle while saying it. The Amazon servers record this physical abnormality and Alexa will determine that the person is sick. The Alexa software will suggest a recipe for chicken soup and a delivery of cough drops in 1 hour. The system will even be able to determine the age and language spoken of the user to deliver relevant advertising.

In one example, a first voice processing or signal processing algorithm may be used to process the voice data to determine a first real-time user status of the user using the first voice data. The first voice processing algorithm may be used to determine an emotional state of the user. Detectable or determinable emotions may include, among others, default or normal, happiness, joy, anger, sorrow, sadness, fear, disgust, boredom, stress, and other emotional states. Emotional states or conditions may be determined based at least in part on an analysis of pitch, pulse, voicing, jittering, and/or harmonicity of a user's voice, as determined from processing of the voice data.

So far they can be disabled - and nobody forces you to use products that include them.

I have already scratched two friends off the list of homes I will go to because of these idiotic machines.

One day it will be telling someone, "You need to get laid!" and then tell you what services are available locally to get that done. It is getting to where people will not be able to take a poop without some machine telling them to do so. Sad.

Funny thing is they pay for the privilege. I got a free echo dot offer when I got my pixel 2XL and never redeemed it.

I call BS on all this. I've not found one of these speech recognition devices that work correctly unless there is low noise in the back ground and you slow down and change your speech pattern so it can understand what you are saying. That being the case how is it going to recognize subtle cues that denote your emotional state. I've never found one that works like the commercial ads show; that you are walking through the room and just rattle something off in passing and it understands you. Now if it is keying off certain phrases like "I'm board, entertain me." ; how is that worth noting?

I read somewhere that 23% of US households have one or more of this type of gizmo so apparently, a lot.

So if Alexa detects that you have a cold and recommends chicken soup and you come down with pneumonia, will Siri recommend a malpractice lawyer?

If you're right and get angry does it threaten to close your amazon account? If you're left and get angry does it blame someone for you?

No, I don't. I have a dumb flip phone which cannot do SMS, has no GPS locator in it, no data support.....very old. All it can do is make phone calls.

Oh, and no thank you on the bridge. You need to find one of those "smart" phone folks who are too busy looking at their phone to pass that scam off. :)

Tracking would require triangulating the phone signal. Could be done, but a lot of hassle compared to how easy it is to find any given smart phone today. As far as mic access goes, back when this phone was made I am fairly sure there was no remote controls for that. Everything I can find about the phone suggests that it has no controls for remote access. Pretty sure first generation digital phones are all that way. That was before iOS or Android existed.

Yea, no shit. :D But people buy them based on the ads of controlling lights / music and asking questions a 2nd grader would know the answer to, not to be served advertising. But the rest of us saw through the veil anyway. They couldn't even pay me to have one of those things.

We don't even have the dumb network support that such a phone would even work on anymore.

The rumour is that if you say it 101 times the device will go dark and not respond, 4 hours later an amazon delivery will come and the guy will shout out "hey alexa! It's amazon!" then alexa will say "open the package and slap me with that dildo I just ordered".

"They could be" is a hell of a lot different to "They are". Anyone who values privacy even one bit would never install a device that's designed to listen and record every sound you make, to their home. Most people are idiots, which is why so many have adopted this 'tool'. Smart device users are the new cattle of big data.

The older phones are harder but not impossible to activate a mic remotely...unless of course you happen to have one of the phones with a vulnerability in the firmware ;)

Used to work at an international telecom. Seen it happen, though not entirely sure how as I was pretty green at the time. These companies are not to be trusted. What google has and does is much, much more dangerous imho. Largest botnet in the world
