Everybody in this forum needs to check out this amazing indy game; Mount & Blade.

It's a first (or third if you prefer) person single player RPG set in medieval times. You start off as a weakling and slowly build your wealth and power. Eventually you can recruit and train other soldiers to fight alongside you and build your own powerful army to serve your interests and those of your nation.

The game is still an early beta; there is no storyline implemented yet. Also, it should be mentioned, the graphics are not very impressive. However, the combat and character advancement systems are fully fleshed out and, in my opinion, flawless. There are 6 familes of weapons you can choose to master in (throwing, crossbow, archery, 1-handed, 2-handed, polearms) or you can mix them up. The game combat plays out in real time, with strategy and skill combining to determine the winner.

The game is free to download and play. There is a lvl 6 cap that is removed by registering the game. Registration currently costs $11. This is the first shareware I have ever paid for, and I would have paid twice the amount if that's what it cost.

It reminds me a lot of Morrowind, but the combat is much more refined. Once the core gameplay has been finished the storyline will be added as well. This game is unbelievably great, considering it was developed and coded by one guy, with his wife providing the artwork.

So check it out, download it and play it, and if you like it register it. Let's use this thread to discuss gameplay and answer questions too.

Looks neat, downloading it will give it a shot. I didn't notice, but is there any online play?

Here's a quick run-down of how an average battle plays out:

I'm escorting a merchant carivan to a friendly city when enemies ride up and confront us. Their demands for gold are immediately refused and they attack.

The battle opens with myself and 10 other allies squared off against a similar number of bandits. I order my troops to hold their ground and ride ahead to meet the attackers. At a full gallop I swoop into their lines brandishing my broadsword and kill three before turning to make another pass. Unfortunately, the enemy crossbowmen anticipate my move and my horse is shot out from underneath me. On foot now, I order my allies to charge and retreat to their position using my shield to defend against the enemy attacks. My troops crash into the enemy lines and I'm able to flank the bulk of their assault. Now, safe from attacks and facing the weak side of the enemy force, I drop my sword in favor of throwing axes. I move into range and whip an axe into the back of an enemy horseman's head, instantly killing him (thanks to the bonus dmg. on head shots for ranged weapons). My axes quickly dispatch two more, and my troops finish off the rest.

After the battleI have the opportunity to loot the defeated enemies. I take several horses and pieces of gear to sell off for gold. I'm also able to capture any surviving enemies as prisoners. Once I get back to town they'll be sold off as slaves. As it turns out, the bandits were carrying prisoners of their own. Those prisoners, now freed, offer to join my forces and will fight alongside me in the next encounter.

We continue on our way and the caravan arrives safely. I'm rewarded with gold and experience points and begin asking around for another job.

No online play for this one, there is some talk that it may be implemented in a sequel.
