All New Homes In Palo Alto Must Have Electric Vehicle Chargers

Who killed the electric car?

Oil companies, that's who.

I hate to tell you but oil companies are frothing at the mouth to get gas prices back up. And if electrical demand goes through the roof because everyone switches to EV -- guess who gets the paychecks? Your local, friendly, electrical provider ( who we all know is absolutely trustworthy to not price gouge ) and the oil company selling them the natural gas to make the electricity.

Not in palo alto. Palo alto uses mostly green power. 0% specified natural gas.

California's grid is 41% natural gas, and Palo alto gets 37% of its power from unspecified sources, so its probably only 15-16% natural gas generated power.

Can you say that for the rest of the country?

They can froth at the mouths all they want. When each major oil company is posting record breaking $70B+ of profit each year, fuck them. There is not a single good reason why a single company on the planet requires that much profit, let alone a conglomeration of multiple similar companies making that much each. Excessive profit is no different than outright lying, cheating, and stealing, imo. Fuck them all.

And how many technical employees does each one of those major oil companies employ? How much capital do they spend building infrastructure and finding/producing oil? How many good American salaries is that?

8% profit margin. That's the average margin for the large, public multinational oil companies.

Do you know who employs the most domestically, though? Medium sized independent oil companies, born and bred solely in the United States. They are the reason your fuel prices are so low compared to the price of oil right now. They are also the reason for the low natural gas prices. The domestic, independent, oil and gas companies are one of the last surviving, profitable, domestic industries left and everyone wants to shit can them at every turn. They are the sole reason that this country will be energy independent of OPEC crude within 10 years. No one seems to notice that.

But if Microsoft, or Apple, or some giant banking conglomerate manipulating markets ( oil markets are controlled by SPECULATORS, not oil companies ) makes 30-40-100% - 1000% profit margins? That's okay? Especially when 90% of the technical labor is outsourced to Buttfuckistan for the lowest buck.

But hey. Fuck American oil companies - right?

The amount of profit is utterly irrelevant. What is the profit margin? Less than 10% on average.

Know Apple's profit margins? Around 25%. Let's hear your rant about the tech industry.

There is no such thing as "excessive profit". The very phrase is ridiculous. Every company tries to maximize profit. Are you against business as a whole?

^ ^^ If you honestly believe that their "uncooked books" 8% profit margins are true, then I'll just keep sitting here dumbfounded by the previous replies.

So when the numbers ruin your outrage, cry foul?

That's an industry average. Not every single company cooks books, especially publically traded companies. The tax benefit of cooking the books in this case would be COMPLETELY offset by the stock bump they would get if they even raised margins up by 1%.

These companies spend TREMENDOUS amounts of capital to get to these sorts of numbers. Of course the end profit number is going to be huge.

But hey, fuck America and all of it's domestic industry. Let's go buy some solar panels from China and get extorted by nationalized Chinese mining companies that have monopolized rare earth elements required for their manufacture.

Q: Are you BUILDING a new house?
A: Yes, If you can afford to build a BRAND NEW HOUSE, you can afford an extra $100ish to throw a 240V w/100amp breaker in the garage.
A: No, this doesn't affect you, go away!

It's like people in the ghetto complaining about the rising price of Saffron (up to 5k/# ughhhh)

I don't really see a problem with it. Just part of building a house there. I view it as being equal to neighborhood restrictions (keeping the yard mowed for example, which if you hire someone to do it will cost you a lot more in the long run than even retrofitting an older house). Or I guess more like my neighborhood requirement of maintaining 2 trees in the front yard (yeah, sounds really stupid doesn't it). If one of them dies... according to the deed restrictions you are responsible for removing it AND replacing it with a new tree. All just part of buying a house here. If you don't like it, there are plenty other areas to buy homes and live...

Actually, I think those neighborhood rules are far more intrusive than this is.

Yes every single one cooks their books. Thousands of people do not study accounting and tax law to be "accurate." Please.

I guess we agree to disagree. Volts are not $41,000. mine was $26,xxx out the door (no employee discount). I also see no reason to buy into young technology. What if 3 years from now the batteries get a lot better? Gas cars are basically maxed out efficiency wise. Chevy is not going to release a 2015 Impala that gets 75mpg. Electric cars are just getting started. My volt is rated at 106mpg, the new chevy spark EV is rated at 119mpg. FYI, my volt gets 45mpg highway, though 95% of my driving is city.

GM also announced they intend to slash the price of the 2014-2015 volt by up to $10,000 before any tax credits.

That kind of sucks to be honest. I would think if you did mostly city driving you'd stay in the battery only mode most of the time. Unless you deliver stuff and drive like 80 miles a day.
