Energy.
A grain of salt moving @ God's own speed would be not unlike the crane attack "no defence".

The whole hole is the ammount of hull material vaporized trying to absorb the kinetic energy of the meteorite.

I would be interested to see how much of the hull and meteor vapor stayed mixed in the atmosphere.

(not a bad reason to let the leak run for a bit, exaust contaminated air through the hole it came from

I'd also look for plasma burns on the opposite wall.
 
Clearly caused by a micro-singularity but being covered up to try and hide their existence from us!
 
That makes sense, the original hole would be surrounded by crumbly, overly heated, alloys of whatever the meteor was made of , and probably lots of micro fractures radiating out into the surrounding metal.

The micro fractures make EXCELLENT starting points for cracks .

Drilling the hole out gets rid of the dead M-fractured bit and makes it a nice smooth, clean, hole that would be waay less likely to be a starting point for hull megafractures.

They didn't drill a hole out. Someone building the craft on earth drilled the hole by mistake, covered with some cloth patch, where it lasted for a few months before finally coming loose. They already found out who it was, from the way the article was written.
