Age of Mythology keeps locking up

that is... even when it first loads at the menu screen just moving the mouse the sound screws up like it's skipping and freezes entirely. everything else works fine.

guess i should put some specs:

not mine his comp
2400+
ECS k7s5a pro *but it ain't that cause it's never given problems before*
9600xt
gig of pc2700
muse hercules 5.1
win2k

Could you please let me know if you get anywhere with this? A customer of mine is having similar issues on a computer that runs everything else just fine.
