Adblock and Flattr seem to think this is a great idea. The question is, do YOU like the idea? I can totally see this working for people that would rather spend a few bucks a month not to see ads while supporting their favorite websites in the process.

Instead of manually funding individual pieces of content (Flattr requires manually hitting a button to contribute money for an article, podcast, song, video, game, and so on), you simply set a monthly budget for all the content you consume. Flattr Plus then uses an algorithm to automatically apportion your budget based on which websites you engaged with the most during that month (you can override this if you want to decrease or increase your budget, give a specific site a larger percentage, and so on).

Thats why i use ublock origin and not adblock. Plus i think a while back i saw a story of how adblock takes money and whitelist sites automatically.

This is more than reasonable. I never used ad block because I believe websites have the right to make a profit provided the ads are not overly intrusive/deceptive. I'm looking at you AdFly.

I switched to ublock origin a month ago. Adblock was not sufficiently blocking ads, and many websites could detect adblock and put up a wall. I would only support donations to websites if they completely removed advertisements.

Same here, sites like cars.com just simply wouldn't load with ABP on and youtube would give me a black screen for 15-30 sec before every video instead of showing the ad, switched to ublock and everything works perfectly.

If I wanted to subscribe to a site, I would. Ads, especially auto-loading video's have tested my limits.

Thanks for telling me about it, I've found that adblock was and has been pretty shitty about blocking ads for a while now, but I never really heard of anything else that works.

Adblock really isn't something I would have done in the past, but now it's almost necessary... ordinary news sites on the Internet are starting to look more and more like those shady and disreputable sites that have way too many ads and take money from anyone willing to pay them for an ad campaign. The kind of sites I would have steered clear of in the past, the porn and warez sites that 80% of people with issues were visiting. There was a time I could wag a finger at people who got viruses and tell them to quit visiting those kinds of websites, and they'd just hang their heads or blush. But now, you can't even trust major companies like Oracle not to try and trick you into installing adware with the Java installer if you use express settings.

Banners never bothered me, and even pop-up windows were mostly an inconvenience... but video ads and the ridiculous number of scripts are unbearable. I'm half-afraid to click the X or pause button on an ad because I worry that it won't work and will take me to the site. Sometimes there's a fake X and real one with a hide button or something. There are some ads that even break the site and hide half the text to the point that you have to reload in order to read the text (hoping you get a different ad).

I love seeing 200+ ads blocked once in a while on the ABP icon after browsing a site for a while.

I only use adblocking on clickbait sites and certain p2p sites with adult-themed ads. Otherwise, I don't have a problem with most ads. This site, for example, seems to only display computer-related ads, so I am actually likely to be interested in what they are selling.
