Ok so I just built a server with the following specs:

Case: NORCO RPC-4220 4U Link
Mobo: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 Link
CPU: Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz Link
RAM: CORSAIR XMS3 12GB (6 x 2GB) Link
OS HDD: Intel X25-M Mainstream 80GB SSD Link
Storage HDD: 8x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS 1.5TB Link
Raid Controller: Adaptec 2258300-R 51245 Link

I have everything setup and I have temporarily installed Windows7 x64 until I receive my Server 2008 R2 key.

The problem is that the raid controller doesnt see any drives. I have 8 Seagate 1.5TB drives and 1 Seagate 750GB drive installed. The 750GB is only to test if there is a compatibility issue with the 1.5's but im getting the same result with the 750GB.

Am I missing a cable, am I supposed to be standing on my head, what am I missing? lol Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need to have a cable plugged into every backplane from the RAID card. Just one will not do.

He should still be seeing 4 of the drives, and even though the seagates will probably not like the controller and drop out of arrays randomly they should still show up in the manager.

OP, did you initialize the drives from the card's BIOS?

Answer: Adaptec sucks. I had a 51645 and it wouldn't detect, at all, any of the 1.5TB seagates w/ newer firmware. Only the older firmware would work (the ones w/ all the infamous firmware bricking/etc problems). Adaptec says, tough luck, buy enterprise drives next time. I sold it and bought an Areca SATA raid card instead (1231) and running them now w/ no problems. Faster to boot. Granted, the Areca SAS card seems to have problems w/ the Seagate drives too, but I think it at least detects them. I had nothing but problems w/ the Adaptec card.

If you still plan on keeping that Adaptec, you really should put some fans on those passive heatsinks, or the card is going to beep at you soon for overheating. They assume you're going to put it in a loud server w/ massive airflow. The Areca on the other hand has an integrated fan so you can use it even w/ standard desktop cases.

@Blue Fox: I only connected 1 cable to minimize room for error. as novadude said, 4 drives should still be present.

@novadude: I tried to initialize but it keeps telling me "No Drives Present" or something along those lines.

@alamone thank you for the info. would the best solution be to swap for different drives? or just grab a different controller? This is going to be used in a company so reliability means a lot.

Professional environment and you used a consumer desktop board with a standalone video card?

Well, basically two ways to go, either use hard drives that are on Adaptec's compatibility list (e.g. nearline SATA or SAS drives), or swap out the controller. Some have said, since Adaptec is a US based company, you can get your support calls resolved more timely than e.g. Areca, which is in Taiwan. I was able to get an advanced RMA from Adaptec in an attempt to resolve my issues (I had to cough up a fee for that, $75) but it didn't help, and that's when I gave up on Adaptec. Besides the drive incompatibility, I had this problem where the DPC latency of my system would spike at regular intervals even when idling, and it only happened w/ the Adaptec card in. No other raid card I used exhibited that behavior. As far as card performance and reliability is concerned, I prefer Areca. Also, there's LSI Logic to consider as well.

Jumper the drives for SATA1 speed, this might be the same problem Adaptec/Areca and anyone else that uses IOP processors are having with the 2TB raid drives.

As for initializing, try it from the card's BIOS if you haven't already. I've had some weird problems with the drives at the OS level if they aren't initialized already.

Also, if reliability is of the utmost importance you should have gone with all server-grade gear.

edit: you tried the 750gb drive in the top row, correct? and the cables are firmly latched at both ends?

my thoughts exactly, don't let me let you build a server for my work with that much HD space i assume the data on this thing may be important.

you should be using an intel board, supermicro, tyan, something better suited for this.

As someone else said that controller is not compatabile with the newer firmware 1.5 TB seagates (which could make it a bitch when getting replacements). You should get an ARC-1280ML or ARC-1231ML instead:

http://ask.adaptec.com/scripts/adap...F9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1zZWFnYXRl&p_li=&p_topview=1

I have an ARC-1231ML in my server using these exact drives with no issues:

Code:
root@方向音痴: 05:21 PM :~# diskinfo-noserial.sh
Port Model Number/Serial/Firmware Re-aloc/PS/DaysOn Temp:
1 ST31500341AS/CC1H 7/11/173 23
2 ST31500341AS/CC1H 0/9/172 22
3 ST31500341AS/CC1H 2/9/172 22
4 ST31500341AS/CC1H 5/9/172 25
5 ST31500341AS/CC1H 1/8/172 25
6 ST31500341AS/CC1H 0/9/172 24
7 ST31500341AS/CC1H 0/9/172 24
8 ST31500341AS/CC1H 1/8/172 28

I also have no problems with the 1 TB drives that adaptec controllers have issues with as well:

Code:
root@sabayonx86-64: 05:21 PM :~# diskinfo-noserial.sh
Port Model Number/Serial/Firmware Re-aloc/PS/DaysOn Temp:

i'm also having the same problems with .12 drives with 51245. I accidentally found out that jumpering the drives to sata1 allows the adaptec to ID them.

the problem for you is probably find that many mini jumpers to jumper them.

so I take it with the ARC-1231ML and the ARC-1280ML ... you don't need to have TLER enabled (i.e. don't need enterprise drives)

There is a bug inside the chip expander of the controller.
Due this issue, only Seagate 1,5 TB with firmware SD1A or SD1B are supported.
The last 1,5TB are provided with firmware firmware CC1H
The only thing you could do, would be registered your controller by Adaptec.
Then you phoned them and they will replace yours by a new one.
I encounterd this bad situation with my own 51245 when I tried to connect my 6 Seagate HDD 1,5TB and have to sent it back to Adaptec.
Their support is very good and I'm now waiting for another one.
Hope this help.
