Acer Predator z2721

those response times are actually really impressive for VA, but i guess that's probably why the contrast ratio is so poor. oh well. if this was 1440p it would be a good alternative to the other 27" 1440p high refresh monitors with TN panels. right now you have either 900:1 contrast ratio with no glow or 1000:1 contrast ratio with disgusting IPS glow, feels bad man. seems like OLED monitors are more likely than a good 27" 1440p 144 Hz VA at this point.

edit: actually it's not as bad as i thought it was, 3350:1 at 100 cd/m2 is pretty respectable. too bad 1080p completely removes all purpose in this monitor.

they are making higher resolution VA monitors soon too (both samsung and AUO), both 2560 x 1440 16:9 and 3440 x 1440 21:9. The 2560 x 1440 will be 144hz but the first 21:9 ones will be 100hz on dp 1.2 but hoping dp 1.3 ones will come out eventually at 144hz or higher. Samsung is also supposed to make a 32:9 3440 x 1080.

Here is yet another update to the TftCentral articles, only concerning AUO:
LCD and TFT Monitor News

In short:
- 25'' & 27'' 1080p 240hz TN panels end of 2016
- 35'' 3440x1440 now 200hz VA end of 2016
- 31.5'' 1440p 144hz VA Q4 production (same as planned Samsung panel)
- 27'' 1440p 144hz VA in planning phase
- 27'' 4k 144hz AHVA (IPS) mass production in 2017
- 240hz 1440p planned in 2017

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I thought the 21:9 3440 x 1440 VA panels due out were at least 144hz. TFT central reported news blurbs/rumor that there were AUO panels and samsung panels due out at 200hz. I wonder if samsung is calling 100hz + backlight strobing once per frame "200hz". That's not the same thing at all.

Uh oh....
TFTCentral - High Refresh Rate Panels and Displays - A Road-map and Round-up

TFT Central

So it looks like some 2560 x 1440 144hz VA but not 3440 x 1440 since they are still stuck on dp 1.2 for some reason.

edit: " The LTM340YP03 offers a 3440 x 1440 resolution and a 100Hz native refresh rate. It looks like that VA panel will first appear in the Samsung CF791 display although a firm release date is not yet known. no word on Samsung pushing these 3440 x 1440 beyond 100Hz yet from what we’ve seen, although we expect at some point they will develop a 144Hz version to rival what LG.Display are doing with their IPS panels in this space, but probably not until 2017."

PS: didn't know you were into VA panels too.
Interested in displays in general. Most other hardware is sort of boring - you can basically rely on next year's CPUs and GPUs to be incrementally faster than this years. Displays, on the other hand, haven't tended to improve in the same way. You get new features and higher resolutions, but not necessarily better quality, which is really what I'm after. These newer VA panels are about the most promising LCDs I've seen in a while, and might be a decent interim solution until OLEDs drop in size and price.
