Nope, you can't sign up for gmail service. There are people beta testing it right now though.

That would be absolutely vicious.

Yes. I read this as well, sorry I forgot where I read it from. It is said that all the email passing thru their servers will get read or something so they will know what your interests are and spam you with ads regarding your interests.

Hmm, but 1 gig of space is tempting.

8. Are there ads in Gmail?
There are no pop-ups or banner ads in Gmail. Gmail does include relevant text ads that are similar to the ads appearing on the right side of Google search results pages. The matching of ads to content is a completely automated process performed by computers using the same technology that powers the Google AdSense program. This technology already places targeted ads on thousands of sites across the web by quickly analyzing the content of pages and determining which ads are most relevant to them. No humans read your email to target the ads, and no email content or other personally identifiable information is ever provided to advertisers.

Quoted from the gmail FAQ section.

im about half drunk and tired....but if i read that right then more or less their system just picks up what sites send you email and in return they try and run a slight banner or some shit on the side of your search screen...right?
ahhh fuck it im going to bed.

Just get an adblocker. :p

I wouldn't worry too much about the privacy issue, since I don't think any human eyes will ever even see it (other than you, of course). It's an automated process, and I think Google already has one on their search engine.

i signed up as interest. i nver got any mail back from them apart from some more insurance cover policy jjunk mail to my email =\

If you guys are looking for a large storage e-mail option you might consider checking out Spymac. They are also suppost to be offering a free 1GB account and already have it available to the public. I believe they have quite a few bugs to work out though. I've been trying to get a username registered and not had alot of luck with it. The first time my PC rebooted on me in the middle of registering and so i couldn't continue where i left off and it wouldn't let me use that username or e-mail again. Then i signed up again with an old hotmal e-mail i have and forgot that it was spammed full and i didn't get my confirmation e-mail from Spymac because of it so there goes another one lol. I wish they would just have it set up so you could get another confirmation e-mail or delete one of your accounts or at least delete the account after 24-48 hours if the person doesn't click on the confirmation e-mail link.

From what I read, Googles mail servers will "read" all emails to and from your account, and place ad's inside your emails that fit keywords their system looks for. Example, your friend sends you a email on how he is buying airline tickets to come visit you, Gmail will put an advertisement link right after their sentence with an ad for say airline tickets, hotel rates, etc. This service looks good up front, but ads place within emails sucks.

So if i sent an e-mail of a sexual nature to my girlfriend it would show up with a bunch of porno adds lmao?

I think the actual mechanic of the ads will be whenever a certain keyword comes up, say airline tickets, that word will become a hyper-link to US Air or whichever company is paying Google for the advertisements on that particular word.

It's similar what Anantech does in their reviews. Very unobtrusive as ads go.

I signed up for this service a few days ago. It seems pretty good so far. They have a webmail service and you can also connect with a mail client with POP. When you sign up you also get 100mb webspace for free. I haven't tried to access their ftp yet, but the only problem I've had with the mail service is that I get two copies of every email I recieve.
