Battery chemistry in all rechargable batteries limits how fast they can be charged and discharged. If your car battery got hit by lightning- what would happen? That's an extreme example. There is a system set up for how fast you want to charge your batteries-if you have a 1 amp hour battery, (1000mah), then to charge it at one "C" would be one amp, and it'd be done in one hour. If you have a 2100 NiMH cell, and you want to charge it in half an hour, that's 4.2 "C" - BAD. Kills the cell. So why do they sell these 30 minute chargers? Because people buy them.

NiCad are more robust and can be charged faster- but don't last as long. Most people prefer NiMH. Just buy a few sets and don't use the too fast chargers.

Also, the quicker chargers create a large amount of heat which shortens the batteries lifetime
