So I always make my new projects on a transparent background and in the past it's always shown up as a checkerboard indicating transparency. I still have my background transparent but it's showing up white? So I can't differentiate my whites and transparent. Is this a new thing or am I missing an option somewhere? I just upgraded to cs4 and I'm a little lost even though most of everything is the same, this is bugging me and hindering my productivity.

Edit > Preferences > Transparency & Gamut.

(at least that's where it is in CS5)

Every time you start a new project, you are greeted with this option menu. A background option is at the bottom:

It's set to White by default.

Thanks for the replies. I was aware of the options when opening a new project. I always have transparent selected. The problem was it just didn't appear to be that way on my background. I've been playing with photoshop for a good 15 years off and on and I have never played with that option so I was just like, wtf. Thanks again.
