    Happy New Year, everyone!

Just went on a short birding trip over the weekend. Here's a pretty Eastern Towhee bird that decided to show himself. Now that I'm looking at the final picture, he kinda reminds me of Angry Birds, the game. :)

Been a while since I posted at HardForum. Sooooo many great shots in the 2017 and now 2018 thread.! I’m still experimenting with stuff, I love making new mistakes.

I’m a Kickstarter “super backer”, I will fund stuff that looks interesting from awesome folks I want to see succeed, regardless of if I will ever use it myself. One that WAS of personal interest was the Foldio system, which I finally just got in. These might be boring in a ‘general photography’ way (sorry!) but it’s fascinating to me to try to recreate some of the looks I see in catalogs.

    In other words:
    xjf4p4.jpg
but this is fun! Testing out on some new Benchmade, Kershaw and Buck pocket knives I have been testing out.

DUST IS THE ENGMY!!!!! Also note that my 24-70 is out of alignment, so if the left edge is blurry, that is why. It's going back to Nikon soon.

Next attempt I will add focus stacking to the mix.

^^ Those look like professional product photos. Well done.

And here’s one from the iPhone 8 Plus this morning:

I'm not sure how much post-processing I should do with this tricolored heron... Seems a bit washed out but not too bad I guess for bright sunlight.

Nice, wish I could have gone. Was in Detroit this week, but guess it wasn't public show week :(. Was out trying to help with some issues on the Q-Line. Snapped a few pics with my phone.

I've set a goal for myself to use telephoto lenses more for scenic/landscape shots. To that end, here's a pano (4-image) @ 200mm.

All are great but this one is fantastic! Love it! Is that a Nikkor 105E or 58mm 1.4 by chance?

    Thank you.

And it's neither, but I'm hoping to acquire the 58 sometime this year. In the meantime, I'm shooting with the 85/1.4G. :)

For portraits, I love my 85/1.8D lens... but I consider the 1.4G an upgrade at this point. Great lenses.

I don't normally do a lot of people photography but my son's friend asked me to do his Senior photos. Would love some feedback northrop - and anyone else, didn't intend that to exclude anyone.

Despite his somewhat unnatural hand position, this is probably my favorite from the set. Focus is on point (there seems to be a lot of BF/FF going on in your set... do you have AF with that lens or is it all MF?), and the framing is just right, IMO. You've got a killer lens producing some fantastic bokeh, and unfortunately, you got really unlucky with the weather conditions... shooting against the white snowy terrain and clear gray sky completely mitigates the advantages of the lens :( (same problem I had with the snowy pictures I posted above)

It also looks cold, and he just looks uncomfortable.

This one would've been great, but the framing isn't working for me... too much dead space on the right side and his hand is too close to the edge.

I'd like to see this shot, but with him facing the light, or at the very least, maybe have someone (your son :sneaky:) hold a gold reflector to light up his darker side. For the price, this or its bigger brother would make a world of difference.

Keep in mind, I've only been doing portraits for about 4-5 months... so I might just be talking out of my ass, and a lot of what I say is trial and error and.... multiple conversations with Anh N. So if you don't agree with anything I just said, I blame Anh N.:LOL:

If it's an option... shoot again when it gets a little warmer. The scenery will have more than 2 colors of gray, and the pictures will look much better with warmer light.

    It's MF focus only.

No, awesome advice! Much appreciated. 4-5 months? Wow! You're good Sir... really damn good!

I'll look into a few reflectors. I've seen them in some YouTube videos.

Portraits are much harder than landscapes. Landscapes are what they are and people are well, people... :p
