So randomly I get an email from someone claiming to represent a company (maxhostmedia - dot com. not gonna pimp em here with google juice :p) wanting to pay me $35 to put an advertisement on one page on my site (http://lisa.thedoh.com/site/info/site/usehtml4).

I have no idea who this guy is and I've never heard of the company. What's the scam here? I'm also not going to accept it.

Wow, you only got one scam email :D
I dont think its surprising to get emails like this, I have a regular supply.

The domain belongs to this lady, based in the UK.

You may want to contact her and find if she knows this behaviour is occuring on her domain.
Her email address is at the bottom of this page

I checked her site map and the link you posted doesnt appear on it so she may not know about it.

No... I'm Lisa and I own thedoh.com. ;) The guy from the hosting company wants me to put an ad on the page I linked.

Sorry, I'm the one that should be named doh!
I checked the Whois database and they are registered through www dot godaddy dot com

Someone else has been propositioned in the same way as you

search on the page for maxhostmedia
The link is from googles cache as I use a blocklist which bars me from that site.
I tried the response link and that was also blocked.
Blocked sites make me wary but doesnt necessarily mean they are bad.
I'll only go to a blocked site if I really need to so I havent checked them out.

www dot godaddy dot com isnt blocked though and appears to be a web hosting company which fits with what they were contacting you for.

Being your hosting company, they've probably noticed you've been getting more & more traffic. They probably assume the growth will continue & if they can convince you to take a flat rate for advertising now, they can get you to lock-in a flat rate that's far less than you'd charge 6mo from now. You might want to take a look at your logs or hook up with Google Analytics.

If they're offering you a credit on your bill, rather than cash, it's that much of a better deal for them.

I host thedoh.com in my flat. Godaddy is my domain registrar.
