A multi-hybrid game

What I mean is a game that has FPS, MMORPG, RTS and Flight/space sim. At least 3/4.

Example.
RTS: Vast galactic empires colonize planets and have wars with other colonies for total conquest or economic superiority on that planet (any RTS game) or on the border planets of the empire, colonize planet to build military installations and shipyards for space sim battles against other empires(like freelancer or wing commander)

FPS: Missions to infiltrate and sabotage enemy or colony installations, commandeer enemy spacecraft or an all-out invassion (battlefield 1942, rainbow 6 and quake 3)

RPG: Start out by choosing what empire you wish to join. Select your career. (military, merchant, bounty hunter or a combination of them) Start as cadet, apprentice, etc. and work your way up in ranks, abilities, reputation, privilages and skills

This is a general idea of what I'd like to see in such a game
Though complex, this is the kind of game I want to see sometime soon. The MMO concept would be great for a game like this

Other opinions?

The point is that I want to get opinions on a game such as this. + or - feedback, suggestions, other ways to integrate game-types into such a game. Along with the question of if such a game would be possible and enjoyable.

And the point of your thread shit was? ::rolleyes:

The closest game to the hybrid you speak of would be Savage

The game combines an RTS game with FPS elements. There are also some RPG elements for the grunts that are under the commander.... They can be used to upgrade weapons and such.

An MMORPG RTS game would take way too many resources to run. I don't think any computer of today could run a game that has the population of Everquest, the twitch elements of an FPS game, the micromanagement of of an RTS game, and whatever else you want to throw in from a flight sim.

I thought about this stuff years ago. Truth is its too soon for that, thats massive in so many aspects it would take years to develop and create, the engine is like impossible to make for a game like that. I mean Im sure we'll see multiengine games but its gonna take some significant steps in tech before we see this.

Or possibly Planetside, of course I've heard its a crappy combination of FPS, flight sim, and MMORG

Battlezone. Was a great game. FPS with a lot of RTS type play. I highly suggest checking this game out.

How about developers stick to just trying to make a good MMORPG first? The genre as a whole is stale and fails to live up to the grandiose dreams of an immersive virtual world back when it was in an infantile stage (kind of how VHTML promised to change the web, but sucked ass and a half and died off).

Then again maybe MMORPGs need to borrow concepts from other genre to do it.

There was an interesting hybrid project years ago under development by the name of BattleTech 2040 (obviously, the Mechwarrior universe). Players would rise in the ranks to become political figures or generals or become mercenaries, etc. who would manage words that other players lived on, expand territories into other player-managed planets, etc. You could be a mercenary simply looking for work or a general planning assaults to capture enemy planets. They beta never got past the combat engine, which could be played free for anyone using AOL at the time ('94-'95).

Planetside man, MMOFPS, and a flight sim/ driving game (maybe not sim, but u can still fly) its awesome =)

I was in the beta...Planetside is just a glorified FPS game with vehicles...a la Halo and UT2k4.

OMG... Dude, RTS, FPS, and RPG? I barely have a long enough attention span as it is. Having to memorize three different sets of controls/commands for a single game? I'm assuming that this would be a PC game, unless the console had keyboard support like a PS2.

Frankly, I'd like to see a larger volume of good non-hybrid games. I've seen way too many crappy games lately. Developers shouldn't be so focused on innovations. I want to play a game and say, “Wow, that was fun!” not “Wow, that was... uh... innovative.” I understand the idea of trying to make your game stand out when compared to others but just because a feature is new, doesn't mean that it effectively adds to the gameplay. :(

That's a big universe--or multiverse if you want to get creative--that has a high level of granularity. It would be something to behold but... wow, lots of work.

...am I the ONLY one here that's heard of Universal Combat?...
It's basically like freelancer, except you can land on a planet, get out of your ship, command troops, fight in battles, etc. There's absolutely no loading times (from what I've heard) after the first load up into the game, and it's got static online servers, ala Freelancer...

that sound good enough?

and you obviously haven't played it recently .. the game has changed alot ..

and will change even more when they open up access to the space platforms ..

You wont find a game like you describe but I can think of a couple that were kinda like hybrids-
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Dungeon Keeper

omg...how friggin dense are you people...NeghVar, the game you're looking for is universal combat...ignore these people, and go check it out

Lollerberries.

"BattleCruiser Millenium" - Control a space battlecruiser carrier. Wander around space, trading whatever. Get in huge capital ship battles. Want to get a little closer to the action? Sure, hop into a fighter and zoom around.

Found a planet? Hop into a shuttle, go and land. Hop out and run around the planet. Can't run fast enough? Hop in a vehicle. While you're down there, go and attack a base or something. Not enough firepower? Comandeer an aero fighter and duke it out in the skies. Those nasties in space giving you trouble? Send some antiship missiles their way.. or go back to your shuttle, back to your cruiser and have another capital ship battle.

Heaps of races and classes to choose from for your career, massive number of weapons for all the different ships, vehicles, fighters and first person...

Did I mention the game sucks? Awesome idea, it's so dull and boring though. Planets are to scale and vehicles can be hard to find. Imagine running around a planet in real life- complete with stamina if memory serves me correctly. Yes, it takes a long time.

If you've the patience of buddhist monk, BattleCruiser Millenium is for you. Otherwise... just settle on a non-hybrid game.

Yeah, thanks for the link...

Anyways, I found the site for Universal Combat if anyone is interested:
http://www.universalcombatgame.com

It looks... Interesting. I don't know if it is really that much of a hybrid in the way we were discussing.

Yes, it's 10 years old but this is very relevant to my original post.

Looks like a game matching my wants listed above is on its way.

Star Citizen

Wing Commander series (thanks to GoG.com) and Freelancer have been favorites that I keep turning back to play every few years.

Wasn't there some console/PC game that was trying to do space stuff mixed with ground combat? I think it was called Dust something...

Yeah, but from what I understand it's connected to EVE which is on the PC. Plus, this is General Gaming and the OP didn't specify PC...

PC is what I intended. I am not into consoles at all. Last one I had was SNES

Thanks for finding that gem. Hardforum would never have known about it otherwise.

;)

Though it does seem close to what you want. But it does lack the RTS element. But a space shooter where you can board ships in an MMO/RPG hits three of your requirements.

Okay, so it's a FPS console connection game to EVE Online apparently. Still, that's kind of what the OP was looking for I guess?

Speaking of EVE Online, isn't that the closest thing to what the OP wants that you can play right now? MMO, space sim, RTS. Only lacks the FPS part, and seems like a good demonstration of how difficult it would be to work that in.

FPS and RTS seem to be the two that are very difficult to combine. Nuclear Dawn and Battlestations Pacific seem to be the ones that float to the top when you look for FPS RTS hybrids.

The main combination I wish to see is space sim and FPS. I have seen no space sim in which you have to option to deplete the shields then board the ship. Its always been destroy the ship. Commandeering a ship in FPS mode would be fun.

not yet...we keep hoping though

shit, I would bust a nut over a WWII game where I have to keep supply lines open but can dive down to tactical also

not yet

Natural Selection 2, to some extent, and as someone already mentioned, Giants: Citizen Kabuto. You might even include the ArmA series in there...there's already a Commander view that allows you to control multiple squads from a map, and there have been mods/game modes that allow you to gain resources and then create buildings to make a base.

It's on this month's issue of PC Gamer as one of the must plays of 2014

So, you want FPS, RTS and RPG all meshed together into a nice big pile of MMO crap. That's called life, and it's not as good as they say.

I don't want to sped 30 minutes writing a long reasoning. Suffice to say balancing such a "game" is impossible.

The key to a successful MMO FPS/RTS/RPG would be a few things:
1) Starting somewhat simple.
2) Adequate resources to develop it.
3) Abandoning many of the old conventions of FPS/RTS/MMORPG design.

Of course it would be a nightmare to just try to "mash" everything together (which is what all the "hybrid" games out there are trying to do right now - and constantly fail miserably). The game would need to be designed from the ground-up with the hybrid idea in mind. There is not much good game design talent out there that also have strong financial backing - so we have all the garbage we do now, both hybrid and non-hybrid. Of course, consumers buying the garbage is the main problem.

Isn't this exactly what Starcraft Ghosts was supposed to be before it was canceled, forever ago?
There was an incredible source mod called Eternal Silence that was a mash of FPS, Flight Sim, and Team based capture and hold. Incredible I used to play all the time. Cant find a server now a days, I really miss flying with my joystick, crash landing into the enemy base, switching back to key and mouse and just raid the place.

That, or something like that, neeeeeeeds to come back. So much fun , it was....
Star Citizen might be the closest thing in the near future...
