Performance wise, they trade blows. The GTS is faster in some games (Oblivion for example), while the GX2 is faster in others, but the 8800 GTS is the better card. Not only it performs more or less the same, but it provides better image quality and has DX10 support. Not to mention it's only one card, in the sense that you don't need SLI enabled to take advantage of the card's full potential, as it happens with the GX2.
