8800GT vs 9600GT @ 1280x1024

i know there's already a similar thread on this but that was before the 9600GT was released.

I am having a hard time choosing between these two cards. The price difference is abt $50 or there about. I'm using a 19" lcd (1280x1024) and my requirement is at least 4x AA and 16x AF in most newer games (cept for crysis etc.. but i still hope to play it with 2x AA and all med settings perhaps?)

i dun intend to change my lcd anytime soon. and reviews i find online these days only show/uses 1600res and above for their benchmarks so i have little clue on how a 9600GT will perform against it's elder brother at 1280x1024...

anyone have any 1st hand exp here at gpureview?

I am faced with the same choice, I'm going 9600GT with an sli capable motherboard, at which point I can upfgrade 2 months down the road.
 
If you want 4xAA/16xAF I would go with the 8800GT or even the 8800GTS 512
 
I have an 8800GT and ran the Crysis demo at high settings 1280x1024 and it was smooth.
The only thing I dropped in the Crysis graphics settings is the shadow quality, I set them to low and then gave a huge frame rate boost.
 
either card can max out any game except crysis.

i have a 9600gt and play every current game maxed out with very playable fps.

i would go with the cheaper.
 
Best "BUY" would be 9600GT. With the price hovering around $130 AR (sometimes lower) with similar performance of the 8800. If don't MIND spending more money, get a 8800GT (preferably the MSI one with the aftermarket heatsink, hehe, I have one) and you'll see more eyecandy.

Personally, I only game in 22" native resolution so 9600GT was a tiny bit slower for my needs. However at 1280x1024, 9600GT should you do fine.
 
I am in the same boat as you.PLaying at that same res and it is really hard to find benchmarks that ar good and at that res.
If you find some let me know I am gonna look now for some and if I find some I'll post it here for you.
 
i also have 9600GT at 1280x1024 , plays COD4 on max with 4AA/16AF . Oblivion max 2AA/16AF HDR 60FPS ..
 
+1 for the 9600GT, it will be just fine for 1280x1024. If you are planning on moving to a higher-resolution screen, then take a look at 8800GTS or something in that range.

Please do not SHOUT in thread titles, and don't expect the mods/admins to fix it for you.
 
Boils down to money, the 8800GT is the faster card by 15-20% but its also like $40 ish more expensive, both are nice cards for the price, and you can't go wrong with either.
 
I would say at that screensize stay with the 9600
But if you plan on upgrading i'd go with a 8800gts
But thats just my opinion
 
plus 9600GT Sli is the best bang for the buck in PC gaming right now

its the real sweet spot.... better than 9800GTX speed for much less $$$
 
I run an 8800GT with the Accelero S1 cooler. Takes up a little space, but I don't run SLi so thats not an issue. Performance is great, I'd say its about 5 - 10% slower on average compared to my brothers 8800 GTS V2 (G92).

"Nearly" all the 8800GT's will hit superclock speeds of 700/2000, so personally I wouldn't pay any extra for a factory OC version myself. V2 of the reference cooler is not bad.

Id be going the 8800GT at $159 over a 9600Gt at $140 any day.
 
Which ever one is cheaper because at that resolution you will be able to max out with either card.

I need a new PSU I don't know about you but if you also need one check out this bundle.I mean you'll pay $150 for an evga 9600gt then another $70 for a psu so that's $230 when you can get the bfg combo for $235.You might wanna look at it if you haven't made up your mind already

quite a few do, but I still stand by most don't. It's a mute argument since we didn't put a timeline on it, I still think a single card solution would be a better option for most people.
