I recently purchased an ASUS HD 4890 for $140 to upgrade from my 8800GT - good move? I was thinking I would wait until 5870 prices came down a bit.

Should be an improvement for sure...

Im going from a 7950GT to a 5850... ya i know

When the 4870 came out I went from 8800GT in SLI to it and saw a difference immediately. Tho they ranked similarly the 4870 just felt smoother than the 8800GT in SLI.

4890 comes pretty close to GTX 280/285 so it should be a nice upgrade for sure.
$140 is a good price.

FS/FT Forums over at Anandtech :)

Trying to get my post count up here so I can sell some things!

That's the fastest GPU I'd use with your processor. A worthy upgrade, you will be satisfied.

Good deal on that card. I went from 2 9600GSO's (768MB GDDR3) in SLI to a 1GB 4870 OC and I saw a good improvement from that. Everything ran smoother and better.

(9600 GSO's are the same as 8800GTS's IIRC)

The GSO on wikipedia is spec'd identical to an 8800GT, so slightly slower than a GTS but close enough.

I upgraded from an 8800GTS 512 to an XFX 4890 XT. Believe me, there is noooooo looking back in that move :~] I was in heaven after Ghostbusters stopped being a slideshow when i played it!

I think I would have went with a 5850 if the 5870 was more than you wanted to spend. Either way, it's a significant upgrade and you got a pretty good deal on it.

$140 vs. $259 is a pretty good differential. I'm alright being slightly behind the curve if it means saving $100+

It is a good price differential, as is the performance differential. Your original post seemed to imply you wanted 5870 performance but not the price, hence my suggestion for the 5850 since it's the closest performing to a 5870 with a significanly lower price tag.

In my personal opinion, I would of gone with the 5850.....though the 4890 should be a good upgrade as well.
