My 8800 Ultra just quit on me last night. I get all kinds of artifacts from the splash screen and windows will only load at 800x600. Plus there are blue lines running horizontal across the screen. I removed the card and installed a 7900 ultra I had in another system. Problem goes away. I am considering a GTX 285 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143190). I was wondering though if I should just go for the 295 instead (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130504). How is the price vs performance compered between these two cards.

Can you still RMA to the manufacture? You would probably get at least a GTX 260 in return for one. You can sell that to off set the cost from getting a 285 or 295. What res do you game at?

I game a 1920x1200. I can not use the warranty because I did not register the card after I bought it. That is my fault so I am not going to cry about that. Thanx for the replies.

tried baking it?

might save you some money for a little while.

to chime in, i upgraded to a 260 216 from an 8800gtx and was slightly disappointed in the performance increase i saw, i then stepped-up to a 285 and WOW!

so definitely go for the 285 if ya can.

295 is probably 80% faster on average than the 285. 2x 260s (if an option) would be about the same as a single 295. Next gen will be here in a few months if you feel like grabbing a single 260 (~150$) which would be more than your ultra and waiting.

I would hit up the GTX 285 instead of the GTX 295. At 1920x1200 the 285 should be good. Go with EVGA or BFG for the step up plan. That way if a new card comes out in 90-100 (depends on who you go with) days you can grab that, and if you feel the 285 isn't enough by the end of that time grab a 295.

Hey i have a new BFG GTX285 sitting around, only took it out to test it out. Let me know if you are interested.

Hey thanx for all the help everyone. I think that I am going to go with the GTX 285. CaliGirl, thank you for the coupon, I may order from Dell with my business account. Thank you for the offer AthlonXp but I think I will go with a new one, that way if I have a problem I can RMA.
