Hi guys,

Building a new rig with C2D-6600 and 2gig RAM. I have a Dell 2405FPW widescreen 1920x1200 monitor and want to play the latest FPS games like Battlefield and FEAR. What card should I get, should I get the 8800GTS or for $150 more the GTX version? I plan on keeping the rig for at least the next two years or more so I figure the 8800gtx should last me till then (my current rig has a Radeon 9800 Pro).

appreciate any input.

Thanks

I have the same monitor resolution as you do. I am going to go the GTS 640 route. I think the GTX wold be overkill for that, I am also going to go SLI as well when I get the card. I am not getting them just yet, I am going to wait until summer when the price wars should be in full swing.

Hmm I would go the SLI route with the GTS but I am getting the ASUS P5W DH board and I believe that is a crossfire board so it wont support two Nvidia cards? not sure.

I own an eVGA GTS (black pcb) and an A04 2407 WPF,and I say go GTX for future proofing,but the GTS will do the job with style and speed all the same @19x12

I run 1920x1080, and I use a GTX. I feel that the GTX will be better justified in the upcoming months with DX10 titles. With the nvidia Adrianne demo running in full res with AA and all that cranked up, I see just a slight bit of framerate drop with the fog in the background. Then again, I'm CPU limited quite a bit, so my card's full potential can't shine.

I am happy with my GTS (overclocked of course) but since I went up to a 24" 1920x1200 display...the GTS would actually be the better choice.

So yeah, you really should get a GTX for that res....I might even "upgrade" to a GTX myself and sell the GTS....

19x12? GTX is considerably faster. Go that route.

I second this too, I just got my 8800GTX's SLI and the Striker Extreme and so far all is smooth as silk and rock solid stable with all settings maxed out. :cool: :D :p

As I see it, when picking a 8800 card, you should follow these rules:

Resolution >= 1920x1200 - Pick the 8800 GTX
Resolution > 1280x1024 & <= 1600x1200 - Pick the 8800 GTS 640 MB
Resolution = 1280x1024 - Pick the 8800 GTS 320 MB

Even though according to the [H] review, the GTS 320 handles itself quite well @ 1600x1200, it does so at a cost of some eye candy, which I won't need to sacrifice @ 1280x1024.
