I have this router and I like it. Bought it for a bit less refurbished. Currently running tomato on it. The stock firmwares are fine too but MAKE SURE TO UPDATE from the one it ships with or you get some magical slow down after X hours.

I just got a WHS and was thinking if I needed a new gigabit router or just buy a switch. The DIR625 wasn't cutting it. I guess I don't have to think anymore lol

I wonder how much I would benefit from this vs the WHR-HP-G54 pair (router and repeater/bridge DDWRT Firmwares) that I have now.

I love my rt-n16, I bought it off directron for 100 shipped in January and I flashed it to dd-wrt and it has been running great! Remember, if you are going to flash it, use internet explorer! I found out the hard way, I used firefox at first and it wouldn't work, I had to use asus's flash utility to get it back to stock and then reflash in IE, but after dd-wrt is installed you can change the features in any other browser.

Hm, I'm using a G router and in one particular game (BC2), I get unacceptable packet loss (judging by the rubberbanding I see in game, i.e., I run and a few seconds later I'm teleported back to where I started running from).

Would upgrading to N fix this, or is that problem inherent to wireless?

I know one of my wireless devices use to get severe packet loss, but that was because it was on the opposite end of the house and only receiving a 20% signal. I bought a high gain antenna for it and it sits at a good 80-90% now and doesn't loose connection anymore. If it is something similar to this, I'd suggest getting a better antenna. I bought a directional antenna, and it picks the signal at 80% through 3 walls and a floor. I can even pickup signals from a neighbor 7 houses down. However this deal does come with some good antennas, so that might work, but not really because it's N.
You sure the packet loss is on the wireless end?

I have no idea, really. I just know that it works fine through wired, but terribly through wireless on my PC. This is true whether the PC is in another room or 5 feet away from the router.

I have not had similar issues with other multiplayer games on wireless before (though I don't do much multiplayer gaming in the first place), and I have no issues generally downloading things or playing Netflix over wireless.

I don't think signal strength is the issue because Vista shows 4/5 bars full on my connection, though I don't know much about networks and the correlation between packet loss, ping, and signal strength.

The router itself is not optimally positioned (half the signal goes outside since it's positioned against an external wall), but again, signal strength shows up fine and problem persists if I put the PC within 5 feet of the router.
