8 states to allow iphone and apple watch to be used as drivers license/state i.d.

article said:
Adding a license or ID will work much the same way as adding a debit or credit card to Apple Wallet, but Apple said it is rolling out a few requirements for additional security.

After users scan their IDs on their iOS device, they will be asked to take a selfie, which will be securely provided to the issuing state for verification. As an additional security measure, users will also be asked to complete a series of facial and head movements during the setup process.

Sounds like they're going to make a 3d render of your face. How neat!

I'll stick with my physical license.

Before folks leap on the "omg Apple is evil" bandwagon, Android has had basic support for driver's licenses since Android 11. It's just that, like with many Android frameworks, real-world adoption has been slower than on the Apple side. So you won't really be making a principled stand by sticking (or switching) to Android... you're just going to be late to the same party.
Really and supported by the states? Please provide some links on this?

If only there was a way to search for this information... like this vast network of information that is easily searchable with just a few keywords...

Here's some information
It has a nice list of states that accept them in various forms, from announcing they're looking into it to states having programs in use.
Also has a list of other countries using a digital id in some form.

As I figured. iOS was the first one that had it, even says it at your link. Back in 2015. Android didn't till last year announce it.

Daily? What the hell are these people doing? If I'm lucky, I won't need to show my driver's license to a cop (or anyone) for a year. The last time I needed to show it was for the TSA at the airport.. That's it.

Once a year?! That's pretty frequent an amount to be pulled over.

Yes, I came here to mention last two lines of that article.
-- asked to take selfie and series of facial and head shots during setup.

License issuers already have an image of your face for Photo ID but this would provide more definitive 3D datasets for facial recognition services. While some might be comfortable with Apple gathering or using that info internally it does leave the door open to third party (beyond Government ID) usage.

Recently some states have been pushing the boundaries of Overlord behaviour. (Like, if identified escorting someone to an abortion clinic ...)

Lol. Can't wait to download and install State software to my phone. Nothing bad can come of that or handing an unlocked phone to the police. Only fools would use this.

I hope you get arrested for driving without a license.
-Tim Apple
Is that really a big deal anywhere in the western world, driving without a license is quite different than driving without having your license on you where I am.

Police have computer in their cars now, and can quickly and easily verify your license with little information (address, name, etc...)

You do not even have to show your phone to the police:
Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID.

It is an encrypted communication between your phone and the police.

It would not be an Apple did X system if it mean the equivalent of simply showing a scanned jpeg of your driving license with an unlocked phone to someone.

Now I feel a lot of people would have preferred the unlocked phone showing to a cop than the wireless communication between phones and authorities (with the future of cops car not just automatically scanning cars plate but cars passenger phone as well for warrant, unpaid-expired license and so on)

Yep, I can see it, in the future you have to have an iPhone to vote :D. If you hand over your phone to the police officer, willingly, like saying sure come inside my home while we discuss my neighbors barking dog . . . Why are you arresting me????

If you lose your phone, the person
If you lose your phone, the person that finds it will know who you are and where you live.

If you loose your wallet with your driver license in it, the person that finds it will know who you are and where you live.

You do not from what I understand:

  • Presenting a driver’s license or state ID to TSA: Once added to Wallet, customers can present their driver’s license or state ID to the TSA by simply tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch at the identity reader. Upon tapping their iPhone or Apple Watch, customers will see a prompt on their device displaying the specific information being requested by the TSA. Only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested identity information released from their device, which ensures that just the required information is shared and only the person who added the driver’s license or state ID to the device can present it. Users do not need to unlock, show, or hand over their device to present their ID.

It would be so easy to make an app that look identical with any driver license info would anyone rely simply on looking what it look like.

I am not sure why anyone assume that they would design something like this that would involve giving your phone unlocked to someone and speaking has if that was the case without looking, that so counterintuitive and so easy and obvious to not be built like that.

Not with this implementation, even if someone would have an identity reader to be able to read your info driver license info the face id-touch id would be prompted on the phone for it to deliver the info to the reader.

I had police take my license back to there car, wtf? For a headlight that just went out. While I didn't mind, I would mind if she took my phone instead.

I am not sure what she could do with your locked phone, but it seem really clear that once you tap their reader they have everything they need, why take your phone ?

Has for taking the license to the car, I would imagine it is much easier to type your license info in the computer like that instead of remembering the numbers on it (looking for active warrant and what not, I imagine ?).

Well with that behavior/habit maybe, snatching a phone to get all the info out of it would be second nature.

How would they get all the info out of a locked phone ?
If the license info can be on the screen while the phone is locked, you don't forget locking it or think all uniform people are angels looking out for your own welfare. I would just say be smart about it, some people you can trust your life with, others not so much.

I am not sure if it is even on the phone screen.

You tap your phone to a police officer reader, your phone will ask you to accept it (face-touch id), the officer has now your driver license info, at no point a policer officer touch the phone. If a simple picture of a driver license would simply be accepted and what people are talking about, it would extremely easy to photoshop it seem and it would not be a special feature, it would be just be taking a picture of your driver license in case your forget it and have your phone on you and showing the picture to a cop.

That would be dandy if that reader works 100%, never breaks, gets lost, rooky knows how to use it, software is 100% bug free . . . Once precedent is set, "it is OK to take phone to my Car Office", "that person must be hiding something not allowing me to jolt down his/her info on my car computer". We don't live in a world where routine stuff will work 100% of the time. Really it will most likely be more your car computer doing the talking where your license, insurance and other information can be instantly available to the law enforcement officer.

guess you don't live in DC where they now have military and police checkpoints all over the place. and the way things are going, it will be coming soon to a town near you.

Nope, and have no desire to live in such places. I visited NYC and DC when I was younger, and that's enough.

while I do agree on both of those cities, lol
You're definitely missing out...some amazing places on the east coast.. 100's of miles of amazing things outside of those 20 mile hubs.

UAs long as the police can scan the code to confirm it's legit, I don't see a problem with this other than holding that data in your phone or in an account that could potentially be compromised. Sure, someone could compromise the state's systems that hold the data, but holding it in your phone opens another possibility. Maybe I underestimate how secure the data will be on a mobile device.

Another thought, don't unlock your device and let the police take it back to their vehicle to scan... think I'll stick to my physical ID.
I personally would stick to my physical ID as well, but I can see how having this as a back up could be convenient.

Always knew that digital photo frame I got for Christmas years ago would come in handy.

Also, as far as handing someone your phone and not wanting them to mess with anything else besides what you opened... I know Android (or at least Samsung Galaxy models, but most likely baked into all Android) has an option that can lock your screen to a certain app or photo and doesn't allow you to exit, bring up any menu, etc. I've used it several times before when handing my phone to my pharmacist, or for eliminating the chance of a family member accidentally scrolling to that "home video" you forgot about the night before.

Who said I haven't seen all that?

The statute of limitations is a beautiful thing. When I was a freshly minted adult I was orphaned and pretty broke, got pulled over without insurance in the middle of nowhere. I photoshopped my old insurance card and faxed it to the redneck court on a really crappy fax machine before the court date and... They dropped the charge. WRT "sorry officer my phone is dead" is kind of dumb because cars come with cigarette lighter outlets and/or USB ports these days. My truck has 2 110vac outlets, 3 12vdc outlets, and 4 USB ports. If you can't wield any of these to charge your phone you should think about donating your body to science post haste.
