It was like 4 years ago when this was expensive, and now its dirt dirt cheap. I wanted to start a project to see if I can play games with the 7900 gtx in sli. Just real quick, is it worth it ? Am I going to be impressed by the performance ? Or no way is it going to compete with low end sli cards ? 8600 gt and etc. I'm new to SLI, so someone have any input, thanks.

You probably won't be impressed by the performance but how cheap are they ?

SLI only really makes sense with two of the highest-end cards, and only right after new cards come out. Otherwise it's usually a waste of cash.

yeah bro just get one mean ass card dont get into sli i think its really not worth it.

Do you already have the 7900's or are you thinking about getting a pair of them that are cheap?

I had 7800GTXs in SLI and my 9800GTX is so much better.

SLI is hardly worth bothering with on new cards let alone old ones. Just get 1 good card.

They are new on eBay for $80, so I would guess that I can get them for $40 each. A 4850 would cost about $80 anyways, so if it beats it then I'll go with the 4850.

What about 2x 3870 512mb GDDR4 Diamond. Can crossfire of that beat anything ?

sorry, it was the 4830 that was $80.
How would the 7900 gtx sli perform against - 3650, 3870, 4650, and 48xx ?

I added the question how does the 3870 performs .... but I didn't realize the 4850 was $120-$150.

You will not be happy with the performance of 7900GTXs in SLI. You will be happy with a 4830 or 4850 from ATI, or the GTS240, or GTS250 from nV. 4830=GTS240, 4850=GTS250. Dont worry about all the renaming fuss, the equivalencies i mentioned are around the same performance for around the same price. I can say with certainty though, the nVidia board partners are generally regarded as far better than ATIs board partners.

Np

From what I understand a 4830 is a slowed down 4850, Just OC it slightly and you SHOULD have a 4850.

I ran dual 3870's for awhile and it was pretty fast. I sold them to an H member.

I think the dude just wants to give dual cards a try, and if you want to experiment 3870's, 4830's, and 4850's would probably be your best bet.

guess what...
a $80 single 4830 will perform better than a once-highend 7900GTX in SLI.

From what year is the program you want to use?

If you still want to run Far Cry or F.E.A.R. (originals) then I think the 7900s would be cool and enough, I wonder why they have them new.

Old school. When you're done you can encase one in glass on your mantle as a history item, lol.

Well, its too late, I already bought the 3870 after reading the chart that of benchmark in the first page. I bought 2x 3870 costing a $145. But, this post isn't about the 3870 right ? I guess I need to start another post..

Thanks for that benchmark sheet of crysis, and other games.
I thought even though the 7900 gtx had similiar clocks then 4850 then it would perform the same.

ATI 4850.

The only thing different are the stream processor unit, and the new technology.
