1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? Etc.
It's for a college student (engineering undergraduate) who likes gaming. So, probably a well-rounded machine; CAD- and modeling software-capable CPU with a gaming-capable GPU. His priorities are Office 2010 and games, his parents' priorities are Office 2010 and schoolwork.

2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
$700 shipped.

3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
Utah County, USA. Amazon and Newegg, no B&M stores.

4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
Monitor
Case
CPU
RAM
GPU
Motherboard
PSU
HDD
Optical drive

5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especiallyspecificabout the power supply. List make and model.
None, completely new build (including monitor, excluding peripherals).

6) Will you be overclocking?
Probably not.

7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
N/A as the monitor is required as well, but I'd expect 1680x1050/1600x900 at this price point. More is better, but I understand the budget's constraints.

8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
Immediately.

9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? etc.
Nothing more than a basic motherboard is required. The more features the better, but I wouldn't expect all of them to be used.

10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
Yes. Windows 7 64-bit (or 32 I suppose, license works with either).

This computer is for my girlfriend's brother. Danny_Bui specced out a computer for their parents eight months ago (http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1616357) with a similar budget and it's been working wonderfully. They're now looking for something similar for their son, though I thought I'd post again in case the recommendations have changed. Thank you in advance; I don't follow hardware much any more, and I really appreciate the service you provide.

one of the core i5 chips, the 2500k being the best, as it does allow some overclocking(even with the stock cooler)
monitor, I suggest ACER or ASUS 1920x1080
Case Elite 210
motherboard Asus Z68 any model, V or Vpro if you want a little extra, though it does throw price a bit
ram Gskill ripjaw, ripjawX, Sniper SE, Sniper SE low voltage of ARES ddr3 1600 9,9,9,24 1.5v should be around $50 for 8gb dual channel kit
gpu GTX560ti, Radeon 6950 2gb, Radeon 6870 or wait just a few more days to see the 7870/7850 released
PSU XFX 650 or similar
HDD Samsung/Hitachi 320-500gb sata 6 7200rpm model
optical drive I like my ASUS DRW-B1ST but there is another model that is slightly cheaper

Anyways, places to shop, I shop more or less solely at NCIX myself due to pricematching, though newegg does have package deal etc

Thanks guys. I'll probably go with Danny's build since it's closer to their budget. The case is OOS, though, so we're going to go with the white version: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146077

I'm a bit surprised that the GPU is less powerful than the one in the last build you specced out for me, Danny, (it was a 6850) though I imagine that's because the processor is much faster and the platform more expensive. Understandable. Anyway, looks like it should be fine for that resolution. I really appreciate your help.

We'll probably order tomorrow.

Well the GPU is a bit easier to upgrade than the CPU hence why I went CPU heavy on this setup.

You're right; I agree. I'll let you know how the build goes. It's going to make him incredibly happy. His current computer is archaic.

The system config in general is fine.

However, I'ld consider a few upgrades:
Video Card: For $110, the 6770 isn't that much cheaper than the $150ish 6870 which would be SO much more powerful. If the system is planned to be kept for about 4 years, that difference will be very much well worth it.
RAM: Don't get the value RAM...$3 more for Ripjaw Gskill.

well, like I said, there is room for manovering, lower cost mobo, power supply, hard drive(maybe) optical drive etc. I would go for 1600 class ram which can be had for like ~$40(maybe $7 more then the value series danny listed) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...0006127&IsNodeId=1&name=DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)
the 6850/6870 is just so much more powerfull, the 550Ti is about the same, and the 6790 is faster then both, but not quite as fast as a 6850/6870.
