Have been stalling a system upgrade as I felt 4k gaming was fine on my 4090 / 5090. I went to 1440p and wow..... Not so good and I am thinking just how poor my idea was on keeping this aging system (asus Rampage V Extreme with 5930k @ 4.4ghz)

really felt I should have 0 issues getting 163fpsin OW2 which should take no resources. But either this win 10 setup needs to be refreshed but why spend more money on a 10 year old sytem with a 2k GPU? Its a bit insane I agree.

That leads me do I try to save the 1k for a new mobo + CPU or try a Xeon proc untiI I have more funds?

E5-1680 v4 was the chip I was looking at

Thoughts?

I still run some of the v4 xeons, they are decent cpus but by no means a gaming chip, especially after security mitigation.

They are OLD at this point. That video in nonsense who would pair a i3 with a 5090.

Intel is not the answer, look to amd.

On the budget side, a am4 motherboard and a ryzen 5950x. It would blow your current setup out of the water and likely cost less then 500.

If you just game and want to actually pair your 2k gpu with something capable get a 7800x3d or 9800x3d. The ipc is like tripple what you're dealing with.

I know. 4k seemed to be fine but once I tried 1440p it felt weird I had some issues.

But I was hoping to avoid the full Os upgrade as once I change mobos I wanted to keep the same # of HD ports, would update so much more but I understand the 'idoliocy' of a 5090 on this but for 4k the 4090 was fantastic. But never did 1440p until now

Do not waste any money upgrading your current system and don't get an AM4 system as part of the upgrade. Do you live near a Microcenter? Their bundles are going to be your best bang for your buck and there's no reason to spend a grand for a MB/CPU/DDR5 combo, you could spend half of that and still have a great system.

You can get a $500 7800X3D/Mobo/RAM combo at Microcenter that would be amazing. Of course, it might be a better option to wait a bit longer for the rumored 12 core per CCD CPUs coming out in 2026(?) and just continue to game at 4K for now.

I agree with the others. I do not recommend spending a single penny on that system right now, in light of the fact that security support for Windows 10 is scheduled to end this coming October 14. There is a $30 paid security update extension for Windows 10 for individuals, but it’s only for one year, and it cannot be renewed after that.

And what other programs, if any, besides games are you running or planning to run?

More games than apps and had planned to work on relearning coding with possible goal of using it for a local way to work on AI.

Have been so mobile though and on the go I have been using my laptop more and more and using the desktop is just a release for games.

So at that crossroads.

Go and get :
870e Taichi with an X3d chip
64gb of ram as 32gb feels not worth it
M.2 Gen 4 2-4tb for Windows11 (seems Gen 5 is just too much heat)

Then it's the conundrum of the drives do I splurge on a few 20-26tb to reduce my 10tb drives with those massive to merge?

Then it's the questions:

Will my g2 1300 watt be enough?
I'm on air cooling and prefer to stay with air on my lian lian old school case which makes me feel retro OP and has worked 🤔.

Then which cooling do I go for and is it worth stalling the build for 1 more year and is it worth keeping.

Had not considered making the switch as I was trying to extend for a new platform 1 more time.

Sounds like that's 1-2 years now from these messages and the Asrock seems to have the best mobo and my version of an Asus rampage V extreme from Asus begins at 1k vs $500

yes and with good room, specially with the x3d, they tend to be very reasonable power draw, but that would work even with a 14900kf (some oem/prebuilt still use 1000watt psu on 14900kf-5090 system).

There is no really good at gaming new cpu that will not be excellent at compiling and running code, specially coming from a 5th generation system, on the margin it change but a 7700x-9700x, 265k, 7800x3d, etc... are all a massive step up, the big difference can be more on the usually rarer first build (non-incremental) of large project.

worth keeping. / Then it's the conundrum of the drives do I splurge on a few 20-26tb to reduce my 10tb drives with those massive to merge?
Could be depending on electricity price and use, if this would make the new system able to use a really cheap motherboard (couple of m.2 + 1 GPU only) instead of an over $400 x870e system and use it over the network ?

265k is super cheap right now. Its not the very best gaming cpu so people will poopoo it but its a great option at around $250. Theres headroom to go 285k afterwards and the refresh is coming but its probably a dead socket after. Thats not exactly anything new though, intel has been doing that forever. At basically half the cost vs a 9800x3d, its a great value.

The thing is that while the 265K and the 285K aren't the best at games compared to the AMD CPU, it plays it just fine and is better at work-related stuff from what I've read. Agree with the above post.

You can get a Xeon E5-1660 V3 for like $25, that's less than the cost of lunch in most cases. I've put one in every X99 system that I still have, including my backup system and my Plex server.

You should absolutely do a full CPU+Mobo+Ram upgrade sooner than later, but the Xeon upgrade also makes sense even if just for the short-term, and also for making that hardware more useful for secondary purposes afterward. I have the E5-1660 V3 in my backup system at 4.7Ghz and it's still pretty fast when I use it. Great CPU for a backup system.

Note that the E5-1660 V3 is the best way to go for X99. E5-1660 V3 is unlocked (overclockable) while E5-1660 V4 is newer, but LOCKED. There is also a E5-1680 V3 but it's usually much more expensive and the only difference is clock-speed, which you can make up via overclocking.

Is yours OC on air or water?

The 5930k I have on air @ 4ghz

We got a similar setup. For $25 that sounds like a super minor upgrade for a boost and could keep this setup as a backup server 🤔 just unsure how to move x99 to win 11 and then buy the parts for for the rest

Do you have an MSDN subscription? If so, install Server 2025 instead.

Couldn't you install win11 with the Rufus method?

Then yes save your money for something new. If not close to a microcenter, keep a close eye on the newegg combo configuration tool. I recently got a 9800x3d, asrock x870e nova wifi and 32gb ddr5 for $812 which included tax. The combo adjustments were like $170.

My X99 boards all got stolen so I have a bunch of extra CPUs now lol, if you don't want to overclock I could send you a basement tier 6950X if you want just pm me your address.
