5900X worth it for my use case?

Good afternoon,

I have a highly unbalanced system that I used only for triple A gaming at 1440p. I'm running an 8700k at stock, 16 gigs of 3000 mhz RAM, SATA SSD x3 totaling 2.5 TB and an RTX 3090. My frames are just fine at 1440p, but I was wondering if I would see a significant improvement in overall responsiveness and of course slightly higher 1% lows with a 5900X. What do you all think? Worth it, or not.

I'm thinking of changing to 5900x, 32 gig 3600 mhz, and add an NVME SSD into the mix.

Edit: Alternatively, I could drop a 9900k and the other upgrades mentioned.

Thanks

Really depends on the game, you'll find great improvements in CPU bound titles like strategy games. If you're playing shooters and such then you will likely find slightly better 1% lows at 1440p, yes. Certainly not a huge improvement.

I upgraded from a 6700K to a 5950X with a RTX3080 myself, and that's basically my experience.

That's what I'm thinking. It sounds like a just personal preference. I can tell you that I do notice a certain amount of slowdown with the 6 core and 16 gigs.

It'd be significantly cheaper to just buy the 8086K for the sake of the better clocks and better silicon.
It'll perform slightly better than what you have, won't it? It might give you that overall smoothness enhancement you desire.

Honestly, if you're looking for better performance at 1440p there's not much reason to upgrade. Overclock your 8700k as best you can and leave it.

Of course if you've got the itch, go for it. Just keep your expectations in check.

I went from a 7700k @ 5ghz to a 5600x. For any cpu bound game, the ryzen 3 improvement is tangible. Same settings vermintide 2 @ 1440p got only 144FPS on my 7700k, where my 5600x can do 202 fps. As far as performance goes, once pbo 2 is in the mix, almost all ryzen 3 5k series performs the same in games. Ie you will see avg multi core clocks hit 4.6-4.8 depending on load and sc clocks touch as much as 4.9.

You will see a lot of amd 5k chips rival or exceed intels 10900k @ 5.2ghz for most games, just a handful goes to intel in performance. If cost is a thing, stick to just putting in the best cpu you can get and spend the extra bit on some better cooling.

I would not bother upgrading to nvme unless you like benchmarks. m.2 nvme do not make much difference in game load times.

I went from 8086K @ 4.9 Gs w/ DDR4 3600 memory to a 5900X. I would strongly suggest you to do this instead.

Get DDR4 32 gigs dual rank DDR4 3600 C16 ram (you will improve your 1% lows and significantly reduce any hitching you maybe facing)
Delid the 8700K if not done already

Forget about the rest. 5900X is faster by 1-3 FPS after heavy tweaking and wasting a couple of weeks. Unless you do productivity there is no reason to upgrade.

Other option is to buy a 9900K as suggested above if your board is with decent VRMs and has latest bios updates.

Forget about upgrading to an AMD for now and build a rocket lake rig after seeing its performance.

I see, yes I believe that is not much. I don't think I'd be comfortable delidding, but I can get some level of oc out of it. Why not? I was thinking of replacing it already. I believe I might just go for the RAM upgrade and maybe the 9900k. Then I will wait for a significant jump in cpu power. Thanks all.

Even if you don't delid, you can still buy some 3000 or 4000 grit sandpaper (quality stuff) and learn about how to sand down your CPU's IHS.
But yeah, delidding is probably the best idea if you want serious performance out of something old.

The 9900k is a very capable chip and realistically you won't see any significant jump beyond it in the medium term. Even with a board with average VRMs, so long as you have enough airflow and are not overclocking the snot out of it, you'll be fine.

I wouldn't swap to AMD for gaming unless you plan to stream or something like that that could use more cores, and even then you can enable nvenc and have that do the heavy lifting. If you were building new it'd make sense, but since you can drop a 9900k in there I'd just do that.
