I am now assembling my Eyefinity setup. On their way are 3 Dell 2007fp 1600x1200 monitors and the required DP->DVI adapter to make Eyefinity work. I have not yet ordered the video card. I had planned on getting a 5850 but I'm worried that it won't have enough horsepower to drive my display at playable frame rates in MW2. Does anyone have experience with a 5850 or 5870 with an Eyefinity display this size? Should I shell out the extra dough for the 5870 or will the 5850 get me there? I pretty much play only play MW2. The rest of my usage is business stuff (needing lots of screen area) and tracking music (also benefits from lots of screen area).

It's less than $100 difference between the two cards over at Newegg....roughly $70 so even though you could OC the 5850 to near or at 5870 speeds you could spend another @ $70 and OC the 5870 even higher than that.

I had the same dillema as you except that I'm not setting up an eyefinity setup and I wound up getting the 5870 because I knew I would regret it later if I didn't.

you've already dropped a pretty coin on the monitors - if the pricing is only $70-$100 difference, i think I'd opt for the 5870...

you'll kick yourself every time you see your frame rate drop when using the 5850... even if the 5870 isn't much better, you'll always have that doubt / regret lol

I actually got all three monitors for $465, but add $100 for the adapter and $300 at least for a video card and I see your point. It's probably worth the extra $70-$100, even if the difference isn't huge.

The stock clocked XFX HD5870 I got about a week ago was $399, it's since dropped to $397 (but this is the one I'm having GSOD issues with). It's got the regular stock cooler on it.

But there's also another stock clocked XFX HD5870 at newegg that I first saw about 3 days after I ordered my card that's got the older style cooler on it.....I don't know what the purpose of the second card is.....perhaps it's a revision 2 card?

SOB.
It's all black on the side....

I want.

It turns out I may not have the physical room for the 5870 in my case. Right now I have a 9800 GTX+ and it's crammed in there. The 11" 5870 may not fit. That would be sad. The case is an Antec Sonata because I need my computer to be quiet, so just getting a bigger case wouldn't be very easy.
