The HD 5770 and HD 5850 are both on my short list.

My primary option for the 5770 is the Sapphire Vapor-X. I have no idea about the HD 5850, because most of them seem to use the reference cooler.

I'll be putting them in a system (not one in my signature) where fairly cool and very quiet operation are at a premium, even under stress. Assume abysmal case ventilation, if any. Assume that my power supply is enough to power the 5850, but nothing better (so the 4870, 4890, etc. are not options).

How much louder and hotter can I expect the 5850 to be than the 5770, if at all? I'm aware they should be comparable when idle, but load is what separates the big boys from the whiny girls.

Other factors on my mind:

1. The Vapor-X is at a reasonable price, I think, given the cooling solution. $180 is something I'm fine with over the $165 alternatives.
2. I'm not very comfortable paying the $50 premium over MSRP for the 5850. I'd likely wait for a deal before jumping on it.
3. It would be nice to have a couple years of lasting power. I kind of regret not going for the 6800 GT instead of the 6600 GT five years ago, and I don't want to make that mistake again. The performance gap between the 5770 and 5850 seems to be analogous.
