I'm meeting a guy tonight to buy a "new in box" ipod touch, 4th generation. How can I tell by looking at the product and package that it is indeed a 4th generation? Anyone know the serial number or product number ranges that differentiate the generations?

I don't want to get it home, open it, and find a 3rd or 2nd gen ipod in a 4th gen box.....

The price is in the right range for an 8GB 4th generation, but the guy on the phone (from craigslist) sounded a bit sketchy....

If it has a camera it is a fourth generation. If it doesn't, then it is not.

Yeah. Just wasn't sure how obvious that would be looking through the packaging materials.

Tell him that you are buying it on the condition that it is a 4th Generation. That you will only do it if he is agreeable to the following arrangement:

You show him the cash
He let's you open it and make sure it's a fourth gen
THEN you give him the cash

Glad everything worked out. Since on the Craigslist topic, I thought I would add a few basics in the interest of safe transactions. .

-Whether you are the buyer or seller, ALWAYS meet in public, well lit location. Never go to someones house to make transaction. I typically insist that meeting occurs in the parking lot of city hall/police station or at the school where I work (cameras everywhere)

-Be cautious of someone who wants to insist on a certain place

-If you can, bring someone with you.

-Notify other party that the transaction will be conducted while under surveillance
from someone nearby (doesn't matter if true or not)

Yes, there is slight chance that people might think you are a freak, but more often it will also put the other person at ease as well

Never had anyone try to rip me off, but you can never be too careful--especially in this economy

Ipod touch 4g looks and feels different than all other models. Its thinner and has a different form factor. Plus the camera is the dead give aways.
